For a school assignment :) Please help me out, my parents are asleep and I don't want to wake them

 Ask someone from your parents’ generation to identify five of the most significant Social Changes that have taken place in North America/the world since he/she was a teenager.
 On the chart provided, list their answers and ask them to talk about some of the effects of these changes upon them and for society today.

--

So what are the 5 most significant changes in North America/the world since you were a teenager? And how have these changes effected you and society for today?

Not going to give you five but I'll give you one:

The Internet is probably one of the biggest changes since I was 18. Information is so readily available now it's unreal. When I was in highschool you had to grab an encylopedia for information, now just google what you want to know.

I really don't know how your generation does it with all the social media outlets like twitter and Facebook. I would have gotten into so many fights with the trash talking that goes on on FB ;)

No worries on skittles. Didn't answer for reps. Good luck on your assignment.

BTW, the guy is asking for North American specific stuff.

If we're talking about purely social changes, rather than things that have changed social interaction, then I'd have to pick the destruction of the World Trade Center as the one thing that has had the biggest effect on North American social interaction. Increased security and racial profiling, "war on terror" and subsequent wars on Muslim soil.

The web and cell phones...those were def a huge change for our every lives. Of course, when cell phones first came out, there was a base you carried that was the size of a small suitcase, it had a huge metal antannae that you had to pull out, and the receiver was wired to the base and was larger than today's house phones. Best part? They cost about $3-5 per min to use.

9-11 hysteria???? As a 9-11 witness and one who knows a lot of families that lost parents, I am more than offended by that comment.

For the OP, the Internet is by far the most significant development of our lifetime and it is still in its infancy.

i love it when a kid leaves an assignment to the last minute.

the number one change is that a kid can leave an assignment to the night before, when his parents are asleep, and still find someone to bail them out!

computers/technology
USSR breakup

and the rise of the New York Football Giants into consistent relevance.

I remember as a teenager seeing Cable TV put into our neighborhood in Garland TX. I stayed home and watched the first (almost) 24 hours of MTV. Also, saw the birth of Video Games. Even met my wife in a video arcade.

But, the one biggest thing that I've seen change in our world is the rise of terrorism. From the Iran hostage crisis to 9/11 to homegrown terrorist like Timothy McVeigh and Ted Kaczynski.

Let's see, as someone now with small kids,
Things that have changed since I was in school.

every child that didn't listen to a teacher wasn't diagnosed with ADD.
If someone in highschool gave you trouble you could kick his butt without fear of being arrested for assault.
Bullying really wasn't a problem in school like it is now. It seems kids just don't want to stand up for themselves anymore or their punished for standing up for themselves.

Jeez, don't get offended over a two word answer. I tried to distinguish 9/11 and the 'post 9/11 TSA, Patriot Act, Guantanamo, Iraq, NDAA overreaction'.

That's the perfect list. I recall that right after I graduated high school it seemed like the world was becoming a better place. I miss the early 90's.
