1.
a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2.
an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3.
the object of such devotion.
4.
a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5.

So what makes the Branch Davidians a cult, versus a more mainstream religion? Is it sheer numbers? Christianity isn't a cult, but is Mormonism? LDS? Nazerene? What are the deciding factors?

Christianity isn’t a cult but Catholicism is. It’s taking a belief and constructing a set of rituals, traditions and authoritative power structures around it.

Well you can take your wild accusations about the catholic church and nail them to a church door for all I care.

To me, a cult also has a degree of secrecy and selectivity to it. An evangelical religion like Christianity can't really be a cult in that sense.

So according to your thoughts, virtually all religions are a cult?

Pretty much, but that doesn’t mean the word “cult” needs to be used in a pejorative sense.

Good point. The word cult always seems to bring up negative thoughts and I'm not sure if it should.

Nothing.

The word "cult" is used to label a competing political group as bad to maintain the status of the current group.

I'm sure the cynical atheists who run traditional religious/political groups are especially disturbed by people who start a new group and actually believe what they're saying. That must be squashed quickly.
