NAPA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders once again spent big to lock up one of their own key players, signing a five-year, $48 million contract with linebacker Kamerion Wimbley on Monday that gives the team more room under the salary cap and Wimbley $29 million in guarantees.

brb letting Nnamdi walk to give Wimbley even more guaranteed money than Nnamdi would receive.

Al loves to turn players into the highest paid at their position.

lose nmamdi, resign an average player for way more than they are worth.

i dont understand how this move freed cap space for miller... seems like it would make it harder to resign him

The deal is back end loaded, as in he gets more money next year, and the year after etc.

He's actually getting less money than Nnamdi, just more guaranteed.

Considering he had more of an impact for our team than Nnamdi did last year (he had 9 sacks), he deserved to be re-signed.

It sure is a lot of money though...

What's going to happen to Hali? How much money is he going to get?

Actually re-signing Wimbley is important.

That way you can reserve the franchise tag for elsewhere and it frees up salary cap space.

ITT: People don't understand what was actually happening.

Actually, we can't franchise anyone else this year (the deadline has passed).

The only reason for the deal was to free up cap space.

I don't know much about Wimbley, but people shouldn't be surprised by bigger contracts. The money saved from the rookie pay scale is distributed to the veterans. Contracts are gonna keep growing.

wtf are you talking about? You can't use the franchise tag twice in one offseason and you can sign a guy without making him the highest paid at his position.

Al constantly f*cks up the pay scale just to troll the league.

Yes, it's guaranteed. So? FWIW Al Davis wanted to sign Wimbley to a long term deal. Also, Wimbley was originally going to make 11 million this season but his contract was reconstructed so now he's going to make less which frees up the salary cap. This means Oakland can re-sign Zach Miller (unless he goes to the Seahawks which would be a foolish move considering Tarvaris Jackson is throwing to him), re-sign Michael Bush, and maybe sign Lofa Tatupu and a veteran OL.
