To say that these men paid their shillings to watch twenty-two hirelings kick a ball is merely to say that a violin is wood and catgut, that Hamlet is so much paper and ink.

I think within a couple of seasons Man City will win the league, but I dont think the whole setup at the club is viable in the long term, at some point the spending will have to stop, and the club(even though generating a lot more revenue) will fall apart

Agreed that he was excellent at the position and give Mancini a lot of credit for it, but I still believe that he would be better served dropping back deeper like he did at Barca, and letting a more creative player take that role.

Fabregas controls a game and understands movement patterns, possession, link up play, etc. He is someone who adds balance and stability to a midfield. Saying Thiago is better than Fabregas is simply showing a lack of understanding of football.

Thiago is a young player who everyone is dickriding and overrating as is done with young players all the time now. Everyone is always looking for the next big thing. He is and will be completely ineffective against an organized midfield and defense.

First of all nobody said Thiago is better than Cesc, you clearly need to read better. Also although Fabregas is world class and one of the best mids in the world, paying over £40m for him when they don't even need him and while having the wonderful Thiago does NOT make sense.

And no, noone is 'dickriding' Thiago, nor overrating. That's ****ing ret4rded to even suggest. For example Players like Henderson, Carroll or Rodwell are overrated, these players' price tags are laughable, and Thiago ran rings around them in the euro un21. He is a fantastic prospect and would develop nicely untill Xavi calls it a day

it's the first chance to see new signings + any youth/fringe talent that hasn't really gotten chances yet.

I have no interest in other team's friendlies, but it's understandable why people watch their team.

and to everyone else, the reason cesc is appealing to barca is because he can immediately step in for xavi in case of injury, etc.

thiago is nowhere near that level of ability yet.

as it is, if xavi suffers a long term injury, barca don't have anyone to fill that hole.

1. You are suggesting that it is useless to buy Fabregas because Barcelona have Thiago

a. This implies that you believe Thaigo will take over for Xavi
b. This further implies that Thiago CAN even take over for Xavi

i really hope Walcott's injury isn't serious. i think this will be his break out year if Wenger plays him up top instead of on the wing.

****, i burned my quesadilla

yeah, I'd like to see him up top too, but if wenger sticks with 4-3-3, I just can't see it happening.

and with his injury, I just hope it won't need surgery. wenger was talking like it's a recurring problem, and usually recurring problems = surgery.

also my predictions for the premier league as an arsenal fan

1st man united (****ing despise saying this but they will win it)
2nd man city
3rd arsenal (if arsenal sell fabregas or nasri then id move them down to 4th and poss 5th)
4th chelsea
5th liverpool
6th spurs
7-20th no care

yup, thumbs up our asses. looks like we have yet another injury prone starter on our hands. what else is new. wow Arsenal is making me cynical haha.

.......

im surprised nobody has talked about Paris St. Germain. their movements have been flying under the radar so far this summer. they were bought by filthy rich arabs earlier this summer just like City was a couple years back.

they've already acquired Mammadou Sissoko, Kevin Gameiro, Jeremy Menez, and Blaise Matuidi. now its being reported they have bid for Javier Pastore. like when City and Chelsea came in to tons of money, PSG is starting by purchasing a lot of talented mid-range players and then bidding for some massively expensive stars hoping that their money and show of ambition (the talented mid-range players) can convince these stars to join.

City and Chelsea of course are in the best/one of the best leagues in the world while PSG is in Ligue 1......it will be interesting to see which players are so greedy that they will forgo playing for a top club in a top league and instead go for the money at a Ligue 1 club. i wouldn't be surprised if Tevez went to PSG for "family reasons" lulz

......

can't wait for alternative fuels or for the oil wells to dry up around the Persian Gulf (no, im not talking about Chelsea). without oil, those countries are absolutely nothing. right now they're playing with monopoly money and ruining the game just because they're bored and want to spend a couple hundred million......all while lowly Arsenal slowly builds a quality squad only to see City come swooping in with their money to steal away the Arsenal developed players. come on financial fair play!!! put that **** into action!

I don't think he has that positioning and reaction though, but he does have other strong points that Chicharito doesn't have, (comparing these cause they both around same height and speedy) such as much better dribbling and the fact that he is faster. Would be definitely interesting to see how Walcott would fare.

I think he would do really well, and after all it is his favored position. it's where he grew up playing.

he's never really been given the chance there though so it's hard to make an accurate prediction. but I do think he has all the qualities to succeed in that role.

Cesc is going to stay. Wenger came out and explicitly said that he intends to keep his best players.

That translates to "Fuk off you phaggots, no one is leaving".

Fabregas came out a while ago and said he talked to Puyol, and he said he didn't win anything until the age of 27. Fabregas understands he still has time. He isn't stupid, and realizes the quality that Arsenal have even without any signings. New depth will provide a fresh outlook which is very important for a team.

Especially if Wenger goes out and buys Mata, along with any other signings and possibly another defensive signing, it is clear that Arsenal are showing ambition in the transfer market.

If Mata is signed along with some defensive signing, Arsenal win the EPL this year. I am 100% confident of this. If he isn't signed and no defensive signings, I still think the chance of the title is very strong.

Within 3 years, they will dominate the EPL hard. Wenger has a crop of young players who are maturing, and various factors such as prolonged team chemistry, a team identity, and squad depth along with extreme speed (Walcott and Ryo) provide for a devastatingly balanced team that is capable of doing extreme damage.

The type of team that Wenger builds runs in cycles. When Wenger came out and said he believes his team can go undefeated, he was called out by so many people. It was viewed as preposterous, arrogant, misinformed, etc. Wenged realized the quality that he had, a team that was maturing with young talent, stable midfield, elite striking, and an established team identity that established stability within the squad.

Another cycle of talent is maturing. It is also extremely important to note other team's positions as well. Who is going to step in to Chelsea to improve them? Pastore? Lol. United are solid, but one injury to Wayne Rooney and the side becomes completely uncreative and one dimensional. City can maybe mature to something within 2 years if Mancini stays, but most likely he will leave or be fired due to not winning anything and someone needed to blame for it due to the money pouring in. Liverpool will not mount a prolonged season long challenge imo, and Tottenham will fall apart within 3 years and be at best a mid table club.

Mata will cost Arsenal over £20 million. He is the prized asset of Valencia, a team that has recently found a 'solution' to their long term financial problems so are no longer under pressure to sell a la Silva and Villa.

I highly, highly doubt Mata will leave. Carzola has just signed for Malaga, who was a reported target for Arsenal.

Arsenal should sign Joe Cole. I'll drive him to London himself.

over 20? his release clause is under £20m

don't remember what it is exactly, but it certainly isn't over 20. I think if wenger wants him, he can be had for around £17-18m, which is a very reasonable price.

One thing against the above argument, Cecs main motives to move right now is to play under his greatest idol Pep not just the club. He knows he will eventually be leaving for Barcelona but he knows that Pep can quit any day (his contract always been for a year only).

Don't go Chelsea, there's no fun in starting with one of the big boys.

I'd go with a proper League club from the midtable, someone like Everton or Villa. Both teams have some quality players as well.

It comes down to the money. The only possible thing that could convince Wenger to release Fabregas is if Barcelona offer 40m in cash which Barcelona don't have. I'm fairly sure that Barcelona will try and pay over a certain time period, and I remember reading recently that they still haven't paid the Henry transfer fee although I am not entirely sure on that.

The other option I could see is offering a player + cash deal. The only player that I can see Wenger taking is Thiago, but based on his performance recently I don't think he will be released, although I think it would be a good deal for Barcelona and a bad deal for Arsenal if that trade were to occur.

Its either straight money, or cash + player deal. Barcelona don't have money effective immediately, and I don't see any player that can give Arsenal a good trade and you can bet that Wenger will not get cheated.

I don't see how it will happen.

EDIT: I also thought that Guardiola was leaving after this next year? I think the political tension along with just the general pressure being manager at Barcelona is not enjoyable for him.

I've never used a premier league team but IMO you'll have much more fun starting with a Premier team OR if you put the settings on easy. I've ran my last to manager modes with the Red Bulls but on the Legendary difficulty or whatever it is and it's practically impossible to recruit top level players to your team during the first 2-3 years. The best I had done was to pick up Clichy. You either won't have enough money to do anything cool, or good players will not "respect" you manager enough to make the switch. I guess it's pretty realistic, but it's also a game. I rather play with my home team and be able to do something special with them than to run with a team in the EPL, win all my games easily and essentially form a Barcelona type team.

I kind of stopped with manager mode also because of the rankings. Players are practically never in form so it's very difficult to improve anyones ranking. Apparently this may get fixed a little in Fifa 12.

wesbender
07-27-2011, 07:57 PM
I always play manager mode with a league 2 team and eventually take them to champions league glory.

I try to keep as many of the original players as I can to make it more challenging, while making as few big transfers as possible.

the first couple seasons can be pretty tough if you pick a club with a small budget.

much more fun than playing with a big club.

How can you feel ANY connection to a team that you've never watched? It's a front, they can't feel anything.

Try watching 100s of League 1 games in the freezing cold and rain and watch your HOME team lose in the 90th minute to a joke of a penalty, or celebrate when you beat a higher division team 3-0 in a cup, until you do this you're not a real football fan in my opinion. There is no way to compare this to watching a team you just chose on television. You don't chose a team, you're GIVEN a team

Dear Players of Grimsby Town FC,
I am writing with regard to my absolute astonishment and disbelief as to the sheer magnitude of your complete lack of talent and failure to carry out the job for which you are paid to do. I am not aware of any swear word or other derogatory phrase in my current vocabulary which comes close to a description of your ‘performance’ (and I use that term loosely) this afternoon, but let me just say that you have collectively reached a level of inadequacy and ineptitude that neither I nor modern science had previously considered possible.

In fact I recall a time, in my youth, when I decided to call in sick at work and instead spent the entire day in my one bedroom flat wearing nothing but my underpants, eating toast and ------- furiously over second-rate Scandinavian porn. Yet somehow, I still managed to contribute more to my employer in that one Andrex-filled day than you complete bunch of toss-baskets have contributed to this club in your entire time here.

I would genuinely like to know how you pathetic little pishflaps sleep at night, knowing full well that you have taken my money and that of several thousand others and delivered precisely ---- all in return. I run a business myself, and I believe I could take any 4,000 of my customers at random; burn down their houses, impregnate their wives and then dismember their children before systematically sending them back in the post, limb-by-limb, and still ensure a level of customer satisfaction which exceeds that which I have experienced at Blundell Park at any time so far this season.

You are a total disgrace, not only to your profession, not only to the human race, but to nature itself. This may sound like an exaggeration, but believe me when I say that I have passed kidney stones which have brought me a greater level of pleasure and entertainment than watching each of you worthless excuses for professional footballers attempt to play a game you are clearly incapable of playing, week-in, week-out.

I considered, for a second, that I was perhaps being a little too harsh. But then I recalled that I have blindly given you all the benefit of the doubt for too long now. Yes, for too long you have failed to earn the air you’ve been breathing by offering any kind of tangible quality either as footballers or as people in general. As such, I feel it’s only fair that your supply runs out forthwith.

I trust, at this precise moment in time, that Mr Fenty is in his office tapping away on the easyJet web site booking you all one-way flights to Zurich, complete with an overnight stay with our cheese eating friends at Dignitas. Don’t bother packing your toothbrush – you won’t need it.

In the event that our beloved chairman can’t afford the expense (understandable given that he’s soon going to have to assemble a new squad from scratch), then I am prepared to sell my family (including my unborn child) to a dubious consortium of Middle Eastern businessmen in order to pay for the flights. Christ, I’ll drive you there myself, one-by one, without sleep, if I have to.

Failing that, understanding that most dubious Middle Eastern businessmen are tied-up purchasing Premier League football clubs, I ask you to please take matters into your hands. Use your imagination, guys – strangle yourselves or cover yourself in tinfoil and take a fork to a nearby plug socket, or something. Just put yourselves and us fans out of our collective misery.

So, in summary, you pack of repugnant, sputum-filled, invertebrate --------; leave this club now and don’t you ------- dare look back. You’ve consistently demonstrated less passion and desire than can commonly be found within the contents of a sloth’s scrotum, so frankly you can just all ---- off – don’t pass go, don’t collect your wages, don’t ever come back to this town again.

I look forward to you serving me at my local McDonald’s drive-through in the near future.

Yours sincerely
A very disillusioned Mariner

Santos up 3-0, Ronaldinho pulls a hat-trick out of his ass and his team (Flamengo) wins it 5-4. Hope there's a highlight video up soon because it was an amazing game.

EDIT: I'll add an English video when there's one.

City - I went off football in my mid-teenage years and my best mate who got me into football is a city fan, so its just natural.

Club America - Grew up playing and watching the Mexican league and the team my dad would support was America.

FC Barcelona - Pretty much the same as above. My dad liked watching Rivaldo, Figo and Ronaldo playing in the late 90's.

Chelsea - Started watching EPL around my freshmen/sophomore year in HS when my friend introduced me to the league. I asked my friend what team he followed and he told me Chelsea. So I began to follow them casually and ended up liking them.

I support Barcelona because they represent the type of football I like (passing the ball around and not rushing things). Always the way I've tried to play myself so I really respect that's how they try to play. Xavi is also my favoriter player because this is exactly what he tries to do. Never one to be selfish. He is the guy I try most to play like.

I also support the Wellington Phoenix (not sure who here will know them lol) because they are the only real professional team in New Zealand.

Goal line technology was used in the FIFA U17 tourney held in Peru a few years ago. But there weren't any plays that warranted the use of it. Also was the first tournament to utilize artificial turf for every match. But that also failed because the fields were not made of the best quality, and they heat up to like 120F or some sh!t and some local players used to get burned (srs). All those fields have been ripped up since.

I love how FIFA treated us like an experiment, and then they are nowhere to be seen since, or even talk about it.

Come off it, it's true

I'm English, no one really talked about goal line technology before the World Cup. A low level of discussion, but no serious move. All of a sudden, Lampard's ball crosses the line and all of England wants this technology ASAP.

Bayern - Only really got hooked on Footy around the '08 Euros, was amazed at the passion and beauty of the game (and pissed off that I had missed it for so long). Grandparents are German, so I followed Germany throughout the tournament... as they did fairly well throughout (up until the finals) I got hooked. I also really love the German national teams hard work ethic, growing up around hockey makes you appreciate players who aren't always necessarily the most skilled, but will work until they die in order to play for the team. Bayern has a large core of German internationals so it was a natural response to begin following and liking them (it was especially Lahm and Schweiny who I realllllly liked). Since then the love affair has grown and now Im obsessed with this game and extremely pissed I wasn't born in or live in Europe so I could experience the live show on such a high level more consistently.

Do king of agree. Its typical humility from Scholesy, one of the best midfielders of the past decade in world football. The Scholesy of last season wasn't the same Scholesy in his prime though.

Yes our midfield can improve. I do feel that if we get a settled midfield without constant change and rotation then it would become a lot better with the players we've already got. Thats the only problem with having Scholes and Giggs in recent years. Yes they offer a lot to the team but it hasn't allowed for as much consistency in the central of midfield.

Fuuuuu.... I wouldn't like to see that phaggot on my team (sporting).

you'll just have to trust me when I say that he's better than any of sporting's current strikers.

people love to hate on him, but most of these people don't even understand that he's playing out position 90% of the time and he never gets a proper run of games to build up some form.

he's a good player when actually playing down the middle. wenger always just stuck him on the wing, but whenever he played down the middle he usually did quite well.

he can be kind of lazy at times I guess, but it's hard to really judge him over the last few seasons as he's never gotten a proper run in the team as a center forward. he's been stuck behind van persie pretty much his whole career.

anyway, I dunno if the deal's even gonna happen. there's been talk that his wage demands are too high, so who knows.

The players of my local side - Wrexham - have gone on strike due to not being paid wages. Could be the beginning of the end! :(

"I think their performances and their feats over the last two or three years have elevated them," Sir Alex said at a press conference.

"In everyone's mind they are the best team, currently, in the world.

"I'm quite happy to be in second place at this moment in time because that's our challenge. Our challenge will be to get to that level."

English people only care about this since the Germany game. If it was a German player whose shot crossed the line, people would be saying that goal line technology is against the spirit of the game.

tempted to neg!

As an Arsenal fan I see so many poor ref's.

Been thinking for awhile now that when Tevez moves to Inter, they finally start real talks over Sneijder with United. Everything up until now has just been mind games.

Brilliant piece by Sid Lowe on Malaga.

It's the final of the Champions league in the Rosaleda and Málaga are playing. A man dashes into the stadium, looking for somewhere to sit but the place is absolutely jam-packed. Suddenly, he sees a solitary empty seat out of the corner of his eye. As he approaches, the woman next it says: "you can sit here if you want." The man is grateful, but confused. After all, how did the seat come to be empty? "It's OK," the woman says, "it was my husband's."
"And where is your husband?" the man asks.
"He died."
"I'm really sorry to hear that," says the man, but still he is a bit confused. "Wasn't there some friend of family member that could have taken the seat today? Why did no one come with you?"
"Because," says the woman, "they're all at the funeral."

And with that Joaquín Sanchez pulled the microphone away from his face and fell about laughing, a gigantic grin stretching across his face. Up in the packed stands of the Rosaleda others joined him. There was giggling from some, an awkward unconvinced chuckle from others, a snort or two, and proper belly laughs from the rest. Then there was a huge roar; OK, so it wasn't the greatest gag ever, but still ... what a genius! A moment or so later, Joaquín was performing bullfighting passes with a Malaga flag, olés cascading down with every swish.

Joaquín Sánchez chose to mark his presentation as a Málaga player with a joke and then a matador's moment. It was not normal but it felt right: the sevillano wanted to be a bullfighter when he was a boy, sneaking out of the back window and dashing to the ring to practice, despite being grounded by his mum. He is also a natural comedian, all smiles and mischief, instantly likable -- the man whose Spitting Image puppet spent the whole time slapping the table in front of him, ha ha ha ha ha-ing at the top of his voice. It is impossible not to warm to him for normal people; Malaga fans were melting.
Better still, he was going home too. After years at Valencia he had finally returned to Andalucía. A land that prides itself on its sense of humor, on its flamboyance and downright silliness, here he was laughing and messing about, delivering the perfect performance.

And yet there was something in the joke, the hint of a dream. Possibly even a realizable one. Málaga holds the record for the highest number of promotions in Spanish soccer history. The trouble is, that's a roundabout way of saying it has been relegated rather a lot. Last season it was close to it. Again. And despite its redevelopment, the Rosaleda stadium remains some way off being a European Cup final venue. But still ...

Still, after a season in which he had returned to something like the form that made him the superstar that Real Madrid once so openly courted, Joaquín had joined Malaga for €4 million ($5.7M). "So what?" you might ask. Here's what: although he was the player that got them most excited, Joaquín was not the first. He wasn't even the second. Or the third or the fourth. Malaga had already signed Ruud Van Nistelrooy. And Jeremy Toulalan. And Nacho Monreal. And Sergio Sánchez. And Joris Mathijsen. Oh, and Diego Buonanotte, who joined after finalizing a deal last season. And let's not forget the players they signed last summer: Sebas Fernández, Eliseu, Jose Rondón, Rodrigo Galatto, Sandro Silva, Edinho and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie. Or the players they signed in the winter transfer window, at a time when no one else was spending any money at all: Ignacio Camacho, Enzo Maresca, Martin Demichelis, Willy Caballero and the Beast: Julio Baptista.

Joaquín was a statement of intent. Then, as if that was not enough, they went and signed Isco from Valencia. This week they took Santi Cazorla to the bullring and unveiled him before their fans. One of the nicest guys in soccer, a man even more of beamer than Joaquín, whose Villarreal's teammates once dubbed "Our Ronaldinho" because he was just as ugly, just as smiley and just as good. Only Cazorla, these days, is better. Much, much better. Something was really starting to happen on the Costa del Sol.

When Sheik Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani bought Málaga for €36 million ($51M) last summer, he spent a little under €20 million ($28.6M) on new players. Not a huge amount but significant by Spanish standards where, outside of Real Madrid and Barcelona, few clubs spent heavily. And it did include €3.5 million ($5M) for Sebas Fernández -- more than Málaga had ever paid for a player. The team talked about building a power base in the south to rival the center (Madrid) and the north (Barcelona), but by the halfway stage of the season, it was not working. Jesualdo Ferreira, the coach, was ditched and Manuel Pellegrini brought in.

Importantly, too, a new sporting director took over. Antonio Fernandez was the man who had been so successful under Monchi at Sevilla. It took a while, and in the meantime Malaga was humiliated at the Santiago Bernabéu, conceding seven to Real Madrid. Worse, the interest form the owners appeared on the wane; their presence was no longer being felt. Had they got bored already? Were Malaga going to be an unwanted toy, tossed aside.

Eventually it worked. By the end of the season, with Julio Baptista as the star and Rondón climbing to 12 league goals, Malaga moved into the top half of the table. A couple of weeks more and it might have claimed a European place. Only three teams performed better than Malaga in the second half of the season. It had become a genuinely good side. Hope and interest had been rekindled. And then the team added to it. It made a real impact.

So far this summer, Malaga has spent €6 million on Monreal ($8.5M), €11 million ($15.73M) on Toulalan and €20 millon on Cazorla. In total, eight players have come in. In total, the team has spent more than €55 million ($78.6M). That's more than anyone else in Spain. In fact, prior to PSG's reported impending signing of Javier Pastore for €45 million, it was more than anyone else, full stop. Not one club in the world has splashed so much cash.

The structure is good too: with Pellegrini, Fernandez and now Fernando Hierro, the man who was sporting director for the Spanish Football Federation, the brashness of the money seems offset by lower profile football men who have proved that they know how to manage, that they understand the game. Suddenly, Malaga is being talked about as if they are Spain's third team, as if that power base in the South is a reality. That might be a tad premature but, try reading out the players it has: Baptista, Toulalan, Rondón, Van Nistelrooy, Cazorla, Joaquín ... it's some team, that's for sure.
It could all go horribly wrong of course -- and some are gleefully waiting for it to -- but there is a buzz around Malaga now, where season ticket sales have rocketed and a full house is guaranteed.

There is a buzz around the whole country, in fact. People are actually talking about someone else for a change. Not least because Spain needed someone to try to complete with Madrid and Barcelona. Cazorla's signing was symbolic at a time when the big two hoover up all the best players or watch them leave Spain altogether. Here at last was one of the "other" clubs buying one of La Liga's standout players. Yes, with a truckload of cash, it is true. Maybe even a little artificially, too. But still. When did that last happen?

Cazorla's smile was eloquent and emblematic. But it was Joaquín who perfectly embodied the mood with his European Cup final joke and bull fighting passes: the optimism, the excitement, the sheer giddiness of it. That sense of: they couldn't could they? My goodness, they have as well ... imagine if it works. Imagine. There will be time to argue about the rights and wrongs of it later, the morality of it all, the meaning and the consequences. For now, it's just very good fun.

Looking forward to see Malaga fighting for CL spots this year and making things tough for Real Madrid lol. Also Sevilla is looking great too and is slowly turning into that great side they were back in early-mid 2000's.

La liga is going to get interesting thats for sure. Brb only spanish teams in CL semifinals next year.

Indeed. I'm content.

And i think it's a done deal that Cesc is ours.

And apparently Tottenham are once again after Llorente:

Yeah but I'm guessing he's from America.

Adopting local rivalries from other countries is a bit fake, imo.

Usually a sign of someone trying too hard to prove that they're an "authentic" fan.

wait, so in a CL semi-final with chelsea and barcelona, a neutral isn't allowed to get excited if the team he wants to win scores a dramatic late goal?

If they weren't born in the greatest football nation on Earth, they are not allowed to have any opinions on the matter since it overshadows the hard work English fans have done in order to be born in England and support their teams.
