View Full Version : Assemble the greatest nba team

Assemble a basketball team from nba players of any era.

The point is to have the best cohesive TEAM and not a team consisting of all time greats that may have overlapping skills and that might not mash well together... Explain your reasoning.

C- Bill Russel - More or less for defensive and rebounding purposes.
PF- Tim Duncan - Arguably the greatest PF of all time - can see him fitting any team/setup.
SF- Scottie Pippen - Can lock down the opposing team's star.
SG- Michael Jordan - Team's main scorer, naturally. Finishes games off in clutch moments.
PG- John Stockton - Don't need a scoring PG in this setup, need a pure playmaker.

Jason Kidd - great D, great passing.
Michael Jordan - deadly scorer great D.
Larry Bird - amazing shooter, spread floor, great passer.
Tim Duncan - no weakness, great passer, spread floor.
Hakeem Olojuan - unstoppable in low post.

Kobe Bryant - 6th man.
Kareem Abdul Jabar - another unstoppable scorer off bench.

On an average team i'd take Hakeem over any other low post great, any day. But don't you think you have too many scorers that way? and also why kidd over stockton?

I'd take Shaq in his prime over any center.

Kidd is an amazing passer as well. But on top of that, he's a much better defender and rebounder. In his prime, he's a triple double machine.

pg- john stockton- great passer
sg- mike- great scorer
sf- larry bird- jack of all trades. if not larry than pippen
pf- karl malone- perfect to pair with stockton
c- shaq- larry, mike, and john can feed him the ball down low

am i doing it right? its still possible for a team with amazing players to still play together. i suppose on this team there would be conflict over who needs the ball to feed who. i can see there being conflict between larry and mike.

PG: Stockton. Pass-first PG with a great 3PT game. Solid defense, and can run the pick and roll to perfection.
SG: Jordan. No explanation needed.
SF: Scottie. Great perimeter defender, solid offense when required.
PF: Duncan. Excellent defensive presence, can score while not needing to dominate the ball.
C: I think I'm going to go with Kareem, but really it's a toss up between Skyhook and Dream Shake. Both superb defensive players and offensive too. Can't choose here.

Keep in mind that on this team you'd probably already have dominant rebounders in the front court. No need for a dominant rebounding PG.

Stockton's shooting > Kidd. That tips the balance for me.

Wow @ the overrating of Scottie just cause he was a lockdown defender

If you're telling me to just give you 5 players in their primes, not mattering what their positions are..then:

1. Magic (GOAT Passer)
2. MJ (GOAT Scorer)
3. Kobe (2nd GOAT Scorer)
4. Hakeem (GOAT Post Moves)
5. Shaq (GOAT Dominance)

You got:
-3 guys that can pass the ball at an elite level.
-2 guys that can combine for 100+ PTS if need be
-2 guys that can block any and everything that comes into the paint
-2 guys that can get the ball anywhere in the paint and finish for an automatic 2 PTS.

Last but not least...

michael averages more points on less threes attempted and a lower three point percentage and a higher overall field goal percentage yet kobe is a better scorer???????

michael jordan averages 37 points in one season
and 35 the next.
8 seasons at 30ppg and above.
kobe...3 seasons at 30 ppg or above.
michael jordan 15 seasons...one season only playing 18 games...another only playing 17 games...32,292
and forgoing a 16th season by playing baseball.

and if u take michaels stupid seasons away with the wizards...a combined 3,015 points...still more points in 13 seasons than kobe...with 2 of those seasons combined only making 35 games.
BUT KOBE IS A BETTER SCORER.
AND HE HAS A LOWER FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE
AND USES THE THREE?????? ALOT MORE AND A LOT BETTER?
WOW.

kobe bryant....season 15...26,874.

lulz.
kobe fans are delusional.

although you're right that Kobe isn't the GOAT in any one category...it's more like..:

yea....not doubtin kobe's gifts as a ball player.
ive seen all that 81 points jazz...62 points in 3 quarters...ive seen all that.

im just saying...statistically michael proved to be a better scorer.

the only thing kobe has over michael is being a difficult shot maker.
and imo...it's almost irrelevant because Michaels great career field goal percentage and part of his overall greatness is getting to his spots on the floor, regardless of who u are and taking great shots...not completely irrelevant...but almost.

PG - John Stockton
SG - Michael Jordan
PF - Magic Johnson
SF - Charles Barkley
C - Hakeem Olajuwon

Current

PG - Rajon Rondo/Derrick Rose/Stephen Curry/Russell Westbrook
SG - Kobe Bryant
PF - Blake Griffin
SF - Kevin Durant
C - Dwight Howard

I honestly think the Clippers will be a dominant team in 2011/2012 season. Griffin is going to be the best Power Forward for a very long time to come. Eric Gordon is amazing and I'm sure Al Farouq Amina and Deandro Jordan will be great too.

I like the physicality of Kidd, I think he's more versitale PG who can gaurd PGs, SGs and SFs (for short periods).

Although, I would be extremely tempted to swap Kidd for Magic.

C- Bill Russel - DOMINANT defender. One of the better passing centers of all time. Floor general, would be your leader.

PF - Tim Duncan - Great defender, another fantastic passer from the post, and would be your post-scorer (Russel wasn't anything special beyond about 10 feet).

SF - Larry Bird - Arguably the greatest jump shooter of all time. Would be your 3 point threat, and another solid defender on the perimeter.

SG - Michael Jordan - Duh, it's Jordan. Hyper-competitive killer. He takes your clutch shots, and gets to the line. Plays amazing defense and is a steal machine.

PG - Magic Johnson - A 6'9" PG that's the best passer of all time. Also a great scorer.

I think the balance is messed up on a lot of these teams. To many people that need shots.

PG - Stockton (has the 3 but doesn't need the shots)
SG - Jordan
SF - Chuck (has one of the best scoring %ages ever.)
PF - Malone
C - Andrew Bogut - To be clear I don't think he is any where near best center ever. He Averages 12.9 points per game and 11.7 Rebounds. If I picked say Shaq he would need to be fed to be happy and I think that would ruin the team. Bogut would be fine just getting put backs.

Edit: someone like Bogut averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds with a better FT%.
