The Mavericks are aggressively trying to acquire Carmelo Anthony, according to league source.

Dallas isn't concerned about receiving any assurances from Anthony about signing a long-term deal after the season.

Mark Cuban is eager not only to add Anthony to an already dangerous roster, but also to steal him from the Nets and billionaire rival Mikhail Prokhorov.

The Mavericks are planning what one rival executive described as a "hard" push.

They have yet to make a concrete offer to the Nuggets for Anthony.

The Rockets are also believed to be a team that is interested in either landing Anthony or becoming a third-team in any team.

Ken Berger of CBS Sports writes that in order for a team like the Mavericks to land Anthony, they'll have to shift Denver's focus towards "rental" deals because there's no way they can compete with what the Nets can offer.

Unfortunately they'd probably need at least 2 of those guys to get Melo.

Not to mention the guy is still a bit of a head case and, well, let's just say not a "winner".

denver has said they want young players for melo, i dont watch alot of dallas games. DO they have any young talent that denver might want?

Not nearly what the Nets do.
I cannot see why Denver would prefer anything the Mavs have over what the Nets do.

melo/butler would be interchangeable at the 2/3. Terry is better coming off the bench than starting.

this, the Nets have a lot more to offer in terms of young talent.

There is no way dallas is going to give away beaubois to get melo for half a season. I'd say it is much more likely they trade haywood, terry, and maybe ajinca for kevin martin

Hmmm.... Mavs may have the pieces too.

Beaubois would obviously have to be in the deal. He has big time potential.

Then some picks, and salaries to match.

Why would they do that? Martin is a marginal upgrade over Terry.

Mark Cuban told the Star-Telegram that there is no truth to a CBS Sports report that the Mavericks are trying to acquire Carmelo Anthony from the Nuggets.

Sources told Ken Berger of CBS Sports that Anthony would be a "rented" player for the Mavericks, who would be unlikely to re-sign him as a free agent after the season.

Cuban said he was furious when he read the report.

"If [Ken Berger] is going to make things up, the reporter should at least be honest enough to say he is making things up," Cuban said. "Not one grain of truth to anything he said."

Smart move by Cuban, he knows he doesnt have the money to resign Melo for a long term contract but he can pay the remainder of his salary for this season and will basically rent him just for this season to finally win his NBA championship, very smart move. But I still hope he goes to the Nets (my team) and signs that long term deal....but not surprised by Cuban, hes showing why hes one of the best owners in all of professional sports.

I doubt Dallas will make any big moves this season. If Roddy comes back strong this season they should be in pretty good shape. Would be nice to get a good backup PG and not have to play Barea so much. He is shooting like 10% from 3 and has no D.

Cuban is always looking to do trades and we have no use for haywood now so they should be looking into trading him. Would be nice to get a good 3 point shooter or a better back up for dirk
