View Full Version : ESPN overdoing the nicknames

ESPN analysts and announcers always overdo talking about someone with a nickname. It's sad enough when they give one of their co-workers one (Key, TJ, Mort).

How many times in the last two weeks have we heard 'Matty Ice'?

It's like they have a new toy to play with.

I feel the same way watching a Jaguars game called by Gus Johnson. He says "Mojo" every few breaths. I get that is Maurice's nickname, but he says it way too much.

Gruden specifically is horrible for this. I mean, the whole Vick = "Starship 7" sh*t was almost embarassing.

I get annoyed when they brag about Matt Ryan being so clutch when he doesn't even do anything for his team. I would understand if he drove his team down the field, but against GB the special teams had the ball in field goal range and Ryan threw a few short passes and he was hailed as some kind of champion. The special teams got no props when they had a huge return and a ~50 yard FG.

Because 'Matty Ice' sounds so much cooler than 'the special teams'. lol

True, but instead of 'CC' and 'TJ', why couldn't they think of appropriate names like 'useless' and 'blowhard'.

The nickname era is dead - explain why Peyton Manning and Tom Brady don't have nicknames. Every hot shot had a nickname back in the day. Even a generation ago, nicknames were dying off. Jim Kelly was "Machine Gun Kelly," but nobody actually called him that on TV... no real nickname for Marino, Elway, Young, Aikman, Favre, Bledsoe, Testaverde, etc...

"Broadway Joe," "Joe Cool," "Mean Joe Green," "Too-Tall Jones," all bad ass... "Matty Ice?" GTFO

Matty Ice gonna get melted by piss one of these days real soon.

Brb more attempts than Brady, Rivers, and Rodgers but nowhere close to their production totals

Brb throwing my usual 6.4 yard check down on every throw

Brb getting sucked off by ESPN for being a game manager when my running game does all the grunt work
