A lot of people on this forum are of the latter breed:

"It is better to be a conscious slave than a happy one" - BF Skinner, Beyond Freedom And Dignity (1971)

While I am still a 'slave' much like anyone else on this forum, I derive pleasure from the fact that I KNOW I am a slave, and do not remain in a stateful bliss of ignorance like so many here who believe themselves to be free.

All of the fellow 'slaves' may now proceed to mock me with wanton abandon. I will throw more quotes in your face as time progressively goes on - trying to get you to see Uncle Tom (and Uncle Sam, his Partner-In-Crime) as ultimately being the 'bad man'.

I remember in high school when my English class read Brave New World. In the first class discussion, most of the class agreed that they'd rather be drugged and happy than cognizant and depressed. Our teacher didn't come back next semester.

Also, that quote is from the 20th century.

Let's make it FOR the 21st century, then.

"It is better to dye on your knees than dye on your feet."

It means it's harder for the dye to splash out of the bath onto your mom's favorite bathroom rug.
