When we are calculating deficits, do we use the intended activity level or current? For instance, I am currently fairly sedentary @ 2060 BMR and 2400 Maintainance or so -- when I am working out should I be using a 1.4 multiplier or do I stick with the 1.2? In other words, for a deficit of X cals, which number do I use?

My understanding is that you use your current activity level. So, if you were to STAY sedentary, you would need to eat x calories to maintain. When you start working out, you will need to adjust it to your new activity level. Its confusing but its a good starting point for calories. Just get started and monitor your weight loss and lower calories if you aren't losing anything.
