The Football Outsiders determined that, based on advanced statistical metrics, the Patriots' Tom Brady was the best quarterback in the NFL in 2009. The Chargers' Phillip Rivers was second, the Colts' Peyton Manning third and Drew Brees of the Saints fourth.

Why was Brady ranked above the others? According to the Football Outsiders, the defining factor was strength of schedule. Based on their numbers, Brady played the hardest schedule of pass defenses of any quarterback in the past 15 years.

hmmmm interesting

I thought rivers was pretty damn good this year...

Thats what I was thinking. Kinda weird how he got ranked #1 leading a 10-6 team

i dont think brady was a top 5 qb this year. not with the career years of brees, favre, rivers, rodgers and romo; and peytons potential mvp season.

outside of 2 games brady had only 18 tds and 12 ints for 3751 yards. i dont think facing the toughest pass defenses is a reason to rank him number 1. thats like ranking a team with the 10th best record number 1 because they played the hardest schedule.

I dunno man, Peyton had to play teams like the Titans who have a hell of a tough secondary, yet he still managed to put up crazy numbers. I bet Brady would have struggled against the Titans D......... :D

But seriously I thought Rivers was the best QB in the league this year.

I would think that Rivers/Rodgers would be a toss-up for #1/2, but I'd probably put Rivers ahead, but not by much. Brees/Manning/Brady should be #3-5 in no particular order.

edit forgot about favre, he was on the same level as brees/manning/brady

Ill agree with the outsiders if he wins the superbowl. He really wasnt healthy at all this season and guys like Rivers, Rodgers, Farve and Brees all played better football.

Sports Illustrated recently had Brady as player of the decade, not Manning.

Of course he is the football player of the decade, but not the player of THIS year.

There was A LOT of great quarterbacking this year. It's hard to really differentiate between the seasons of Brady, Rivers, Brees, Manning, and Rodgers because they were all so great.

True. Brady did face some tough defenses and teams seem to rise up and play at a higher level when they play the Patriots.

It is like the Patriots and Brady are the measuring stick of the NFL

4-5 against .500 or better teams. Patriots were 5-5. Wildly different!
