View Full Version : Why does unhealthy food taste good?

If healthy food is good for you, and your brain and senses are designed to do what's best for the body, then why doesn't healthy food taste better (Generally Speaking) than unhealthy food?

Using this same logic, Your senses should tell your brain it feels good to put your hand in a fire or that poop smells good.

Why when it comes to taste is the brain so F'd up?

Evolutionary reasons.

Fat has high energy and is scarce in the wild so we are hard wired to hunt and eat it.

Fruits contain vitamins that we will die without so we are hard wired to have a sweet tooth and seek sugary fruits out.

Marketers in the 21st century realize this and supply tons of fatty sugary foods that are easily available. Now that they are no longer scarce, we seek out the sweet fat and get fat.

There are no pizza huts in nature, but our bodies dont know this.

Thats one theory anyway..

"Taste" is a matter of opinion. What tastes good to you is disgusting to others.

What this guy said. Fast food companies are not stupid, they have teams of people working on getting the exact right combinations of fat, salt and sugar (all the things that release dopamine in our brain as a pleasure response) then they add a bunch of flavor enhancers (MSG is the main one), then the last thing is they take out the fibre so it's soft and easy to eat.

this is the reason I threw in "Generally speaking". If you take a survery, most people would agree that chocolate and pizza tastes better than vegatables and fish.

bigbrutis2 is right.

but this is a flawed question as "unhealthy foods" aren't necessarily bad for you. if people didn't eat mcdonalds three times a day and watch tv 24/7 they wouldn't suddenly be realizing that they weigh 300lbs and can't get out of bed. these "unhealthy foods" usually have a lot of what your body needs, but are very high in calories per serving. too much of anything is bad.

I don't believe you are speaking generally.

Do you have surveys proving your statement?

It's hard to say what "most people" would do without any evidence.

I know a LOT of people who don't like chocolate. I know even more people who don't like oily things such as pizza. I know even more people than that who just don't like anything sweet.

Like I said, different people have different tastes. Maybe the reason a lot of people like foods that are bad for them is because they know it's bad for them? Kinda like the way if you tell a young person what not to do they end up doing exactly that?

Because we're not "supposed" to have that type of food. Ever had a cheat meal taste better on a cut than on eating it on a bulk did?

ha evolution. It's because God puts temptation on earth so he can judge our character for our next role in our continuous existence.

Fats have more calories. If you don't know when you're getting your next meal, the more calories the better for your current one.

We didn't evolve with endless supplies of food.

It's because God puts temptation on earth so he can judge our character for our next role in our continuous existence.

Sit and wait for manna to fall from Heaven then. Subjectivism FTL.

The evolution argument is the strongest one we have so far. I remember reading an article in Scientific American that said basically the same thing, that our tastes evolved to let us know what foods were ripe/rotten/poisonous/etc. Makes sense. It also said that we can condition our tastes to respond to other stimuli, such as acquiring a taste for coffee, which is naturally bitter. So tasty junk food isn't necessarily an inescapable trap.

in my psych class last year we actually went other this. it has something to do with the brain your body prefers sweet and salty over anything else, from birth were feed a sweet liquid (breast milk) that prob didnt make any sense to anyone but if it did congrats its really hard to explain typing it

because evolution failed.

Evolution didn't fail. It was successful. OUr ancestors had to get the most calories that they could at a time in order to survive when they had no food. Our ancestors evolved to eat a lot of food when it was plentiful, and then store the excess as fat to be used during the winter. Fat and sugars are some of the most is the most calorie dense foods, so eating a lot of them was an efficient way to store a lot of fat.

The only problem today is that we dont have starving times anymore. Food is always plentiful, so the body just keeps adding to its fat supply.

ITs not evolutions fault, it's society's fault.

If healthy food tasted as good as mcdonalds there would probably be very few people in disgusting shape.
