I remember seeing this a while back on the National Geographic Channel, they were doing a special on the extremes of the human body and what happens when we're left with no food.

Yeah it's a pretty cool article, makes a lot of sense too. I actually found out about this earlier this year because I was taking an Animal Physiology class in University, and we had to write an essay based on a topic from several choices, and one of them was exactly that: "Caloric Restriction: how does it extend lifespan?" I actually ended up doing my essay on Human Adaptations to High Altitude, but a bunch of things that poped up in my NCBI search had to do with:

* decreased risk of CVD
* possible cancer protection
* shown to extend lifespan in many different animals
* increasing fertile lifespan (in rats was the only one I read)
* improved/regulate immune functions

I didnt read up on them completely because I switched topics, but still really cool stuff that would be fun to research for sure!
