Any simple carbs are good especially glucose. That's the quickest way in converting to ATP. Fruits are good (fructose), as well.

I eat an apple on the way to the gym, finish it as I walk in the door. I eat a good meal at least 1.5 hours before that, and this suits me fine.

One of my friends (J-Rod from MAN supplements) said he eats an apple pre-workout. I'm sure that is fine especially and that fiber will keep you from being super hungry or being sluggish during your workout.

As long as that has been working for you I wouldn't split hairs at all. There really isn't any optimal meal you can eat pre or even post workout. Just do what works for you is what I'm trying to say.

I usually scarf down a banana pre-workout to aid in my running. My midsection has been cramping lately midrun and the banana helps.
