(I think this is my first post).

Good afternoon from OKC. I am 40 and starting to get a little more serious about bodybuilding. I am still on a non-split routine, and still working off of three meals a day. I have a protein question.

I currently take my protein drink (Body Fortress) an hour or two before my workout. I've always been of the school that you "eat what you are getting ready to exercise for". Now I've seen some posts here that people are taking in their protein AFTER they workout.

Which is it ?

taking in some whey before working out is ok but after working out is when you really need the fast acting protein of whey. whey is fully digested in about an hour. so its used up very fast. which is what you want after a workout to replenish and repair muscle. any other time of day i use blended protein or make your own out of whey/egg/casein powdrs. whey digests in 30min-1hour, egg in 2-3 hrs and casein in 3-6 hrs. so you get a constant feed or protein throughout the day.

Thanks. So it sounds like I need to take it before and during, but no more than 30m before or it is wasted.

Take your protein before and after you workout. You should be taking protein with every meal. The idea is to have a constant supply of protein for your body all day long. The only difference is that post workout you want a protein source that will be absorbed quickly, that's why you take a protein drink post workout.

Gotcha. Solid and some liquid protein before and during. A good liquid drink afterwards.

My weight is 220. I think the forum I saw is 1 - 1 1/2 grams of protein per lb of weight per day. Is that correct ?

For me that would be 220 - 330 grams.

post-workout is one of the most important times to get food in. look at the main site, google and the PWO sticky to learn more
