How can I tell if I'm in a positive nitrogen balance state? I read an article a moment ago and it said one could tell by means of urine, but it never said what to look for. Can anyone clarify?

That's the article I read, but how do I know how much nitrogen im excreting and how much nitrogen is in my diet?

I've occasionaly wondered this myself. I checked the bb.com store and didn't find any home nitrogen test kits. Rather than testing, I simply eat a whopping load of protein every day and assume everything's OK. I'm guessing that's what most folks do.

I could be wrong, but I think only a lab test can determine this. I don't know of any home-type test that exists.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm a nurse so I have SOME experience w/ this stuff. You could have a blood test called a "CMP" Complete Metabolic Panel done. Also a "BMP" Basic Metabolic Panel covers other stuff. Let me look it up for ya, brb. Additinally I think as long as you take 1-1.5gm protein/lb body weight you should have no problems.

Yep Blood Nitrogen Level, This will do it.

You should get this too. Looks like this will tell you how much nitrogen you excrete.

Your pcp can write you a script to have them drawn, or maybe draw them in the office.

A blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of nitrogen in your blood. If you are dehydrated your levels rise.

So, there's really no convenient way to test this? As in how much you excrete AND how much you get in your diet.
Btw heavyduty, the two links you posted are the same.

Sorry bout that. I guess you gotta get a blood draw. That only takes a little bit though. Heck go ahead & get a fasting lipid panel also. That will let you know about your ldl, hdl triglycerides.

Untill you've tried this and still failed to add mass, I wouldn't worry about testing your nitrogen levels.

You are probably better off to have a PSA even if it's just to have a baseline for later..:D In fact I can think of a dozen tests that would be better and more informative..IMO
