The most anyone should ever need is 1.... immediate postworkout. However, some people can not have the perfect diet, because they have a life, so that's where meal replacement shakes come in handy.

The only time where you really need a shake is pre/post workout. You could have one to start the day or end it, but your best off nutritionally just eating whole foods.

Shakes before bed are also useful.

A milk+extra caesin+small banana is a great before bed meal.

Since most people do not have the perfect diet though, shakes can be used throughout the day to supplement a diet with more protein. But the optimal times to use it would be pre and post workout, first thing in the morning, and before bed (casein would be best here).

I've known a lot of people who drink whey protein shakes every day, some who only do it after workout. I do it every day because I know with college food I am unable to meet any sort of helpful amount of protein without it.

Like everyone stated it's better to get your protein from whole food sources. But drinking shakes is not going to hurt you neither. Eating whole foods would definitelly be more beneficial nutritonally....but not everyone has the time, or the money to eat whole foods all the time. I have 3 shakes a day. Breakfast/post-workout/before bed. And sometimes I'll have a fourth if I need it. Not the most optimal choice, but hey, better than not eating anything or eating crap, your still getting your protein.

I usually take one post-workout but in school...

Meal 1 : solid food
Meal 2 : almonds + whey
Meal 3 : solid food
Meal 4 : almonds + whey
Meal 5 : PB + whey
Meal 6 : solid food

Don't have the choice...
