Question Calves so sore I cannot walk or stand upright

I was wondering if anyone has had calves so sore they cannot actually stand or walk upright after doing a workout?

Right now both of my calves are absolutely aching, and I can barely walk. I did a workout 2 days ago, hadn't hit calves for a while and did:

standing calf raises 4 x 25 body weight
standing calf raises 3 x 10 moderate weight
seated calf raises 3 x 10 moderate weight

so nothing too outrageous. They were buring at the time but not hurting. Yesterday they were a little tender, but I could walk normally. Today, I did some shopping and when I was waiting for the bus home struggled to stand up.

Since then I cant stand straight up with my heels on the ground. I have to walk with my legs wide apart and one heel off the ground. I look like a retard!

Im not too sure what I should do. I put some anti-inflamatory cream on them but should I put ice or heat?

Most of the pain seems to be coming from the top of the calf just at the back of the knee, although the whole calf muscle is sore. I cant massage them as the muscles are very painful to touch.

I have trained on and off for a few years and never had this before. Soreness yes, but unable to walk, this is new.

Oh, and I just realised that lying on your stomache will stretch the calves, and that is a no go zone right now

Active restoration. Look for this title, in the article.

Some light cardio and low-intensity bodyweight calf raises will get blood into the calves to help with recovery from the DOMS. It will be painful but it will help you recover faster.

Go to a stair and place the balls of your feet on the stair and let your heel hang off, and put the weight on your heel so it is forced down, this will stretch the calf and work the soreness out of there. Try as much and as often as you can to stretch them, the more active you are the sonner they will recover. Also eat alot of green peppers, they are loaded with potassium.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Just thought Id update the fact that I can stand now! I can even walk, woohoo!

I took some strong anti-inflammatory tablets and have been putting some anti-inflammatory cream on the calves. Also mixing between ice and heat really helped. What seemed to work best was:

    - heat
    - cream
    - light movement/stretch

I had to use crutches yesterday as I couldnt stand up. But today they have come good.

I read somewhere another guy who had the same problem and could only walk on his tip-toes. I had to do this and use the crutches to support my weight.

If you walk with most of your weight on your heels, your calves won't have to work as hard to support you, though it is a tad awkward and you'll walk around slow and jerkily.
