What supplements can't a 13 year old take

What supplements shouldn't I take at my age and what precautions should I take when using some supplements, particularly creatine? Please include reasons for answers. I already know I shouldn't take anything that works hormonally.

    Thanks in advance.

to be honest at your age the only thing you need is a multi. I would just eat and eat. Food is the only thing that you really need at this point. I would wait 4 yrs or so before I even touch creatine. Right now think of your body as a house and right now you are laying out the foundation. It a nut shell stick to basic and don't feel that you need "supps" to aheive your goals. Time is on your hands. Stick to a good diet and get some good solid years of training under your belt before you think about supps. Good luck.

In general, I agree with dirtdogg, however at ANY age one can benefit from fish oil (EPA/DHA) and green tea (EGCG) supplementation. Also, if you're having trouble meeting daily protein requirmenets, some sort of whey protein or a protein blend wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

Im not sure about fish oil at 13, coming into the "acne" years. Def is ok to have some protein supplementation, as long as you understand that you should also drink plenty of water. A good multi and lots of food. Train hard and you will be on your way !

you shouldn't take anything. You aren't experienced enough in lifting, and that's ok, but you should lift for another couple years then look into all this stuff. Creatine really shouldn't be an option until you're 15-16 and have been lifting for 2-3 years IMO.

am i seeing this wrong or did somebody really just advise a 13 in taking some ZMA?

totally unnecessary. i wouldn't recommend anything test related or hormonal related whether it is herbal or synthetic until they are at least 21.

ZMA isn't test related, yes a lack in zinc can lead to a dificiency, but if people are eating right, and possibly taking a multi, they're fine.

zma increases free testosterone levels. it doesn't directly raise them, it simply puts more use to what your body naturally produces. but still, i'm not sure how you could say that ISN'T test related?

The muscle strength increases may have been mediated by the anabolic hormone increases in the ZMA group. The ZMA group had 30% increases in free and total testosterone levels compared to 10 percent decreases in the placebo group... The ZMA group also had a slight increase in insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels compared to a 20 percent decrease in the placebo group. This study shows that anabolic hormone and muscle strength increases can be induced in already strength-trained athletes by using a novel zinc-magnesium preparation."

Studies have shown that supplementing with 30mg of Zinc and 450mg of Magnesium per day can elevate testosterone levels up to 30%!

If there's more out there proving the same thing you may have a point, however, they're testing college guys. In most cases they aren't paying attention to their diet and getting what they need. If you're getting enough zinc as is, ZMA won't increase test levels.

Go outside of bb.com, there's more to supplements than the sales pitch you get thrown.

either way, websites are going to market the facts in order to sell a product. unless we're talking about either mt or fizogen. but that is beside the point, bb.com has pretty valid material.

anyways, the kid is going to have more test than he knows what to do for the next 8-10 years. zma is unnecessary.

I'm with him. This is great advice. I wish I paid for attention to just lifting and eating right when I was younger. I wasted time on supplements that I thought were gonna "make me big". Now i'm looking back and laughing about all the fake claims of some supps.

Do your self a favor and just lift and eat good for a while before you think about any supps. imo
