the carbohydrates in a banana are fructose and fiber. Fructose is one of the best carbohydrates you can eat. It does not spike your insulin ( very much). The banana will be digested rather slowly, as it is. It probably does not contain very much fructose, either....maybe 8 grams at the most.

listen...it's more complicated than that. fructose is a "simple" sugar. however, the fructose contained in a banana, when eaten as a banana, will not spike your insulin levels...it won't cause you to gain fat. It's perfect to eat first thing in the morning, before a workout, after a workout, for lunch, etc. As long as the banana fits in with the rest of your calories. Fruits are so good for you. I wish I could eat more...but I rarely have access to fresh fruit.

I hate to make things complicated again, lol.

It depends on how ripe or under-ripe it is. Very under-ripe bananas have a lot of starch in them and may be considered to be a complex carb. As the banana ripens, much of that starch converts to fructose and therefore, a very ripe banana would be considered to be a simple carb. But like the other poster said, fructose doesn't spike your insulin levels.

Should bananas be avoided while low carbing? < 20% of calories... about 95g carbs daily.

Bananas have both fructose and glucose sugars. So the glucose will give your insulin a boost. As far as I remember, a single banana also provides more carbs than any other piece of fruit.

I'm not carb bashing btw, I put half a banana in my PWO.

Can't say I agree with that. You are correct though; fructose doesn't spike insulin and bananas have both simple and complex carbs. They also contain a lot more than 8g fructose if you eat it when it's yellow. Either way, bananas are very good for you.

would you want to eat 30% of your daily carbs in one piece of fruit? Stick to broccoli, green beans, brussels sprouts.. You'd make your mother proud eating yer veggies.

    Check out: http://www.weightrainer.net/nutrition/carbs.html

It has an extensive list of how complex or simple e.g. good or bad carbs in various products are.

Banana rates 55 compared to glucose which gives a standardized insulin peak of 100. Lower than 60 and preferably 55 or lower is considered a good carb and won't hurt your physique/fat. There are scales which report 59-60 for bananas so if in doubt avoid them. If they are unripe you can eat them if you can get yourself to swallow them, GI is then 30 which is really low.

The only reason why you would want to stay away from bananas in a cut is because they give around 80 kcal each. Approximately 18.2g out of a total 18.8g carbs are from sugar. But that's not really that bad.

I would have thought they were simple carbs like most fruits, but throw in the high fibre content as well as all the other good stuff and there is no reason to avoid fruit.
