Rockenmama's Fitness Journey
Let me start this journal with a quick introduction. My name is Pam, I'm 37 and a mother to 5 wonderful children. My fitness journey started in the fall of 2004 when I finally figured out that I was only as limited as I let myself and that my future was in my hands and that I was going to end up like my mother and father ( both have diabetes and heart problems) unless I got off my depressed a$$ and did something about it. Here it is 2 years later and I'm in the best shape of my life. I feel better now then I did before I had my accident in 2001. I'm also happy to say that despite what family members have said in the past. I've proven that you don't have to get fat as you get older. I've proven that I can change my body for the better even after having 5 kids. I've proven that I'm the master of my body and I can achieve my goals!
One thing about me is I have two loves when it comes to fitness. Running and Body Building. Those two things don't exactly go hand in hand so I find it challenging to keep up with both while making progress in both fields. As of now I'm not Marathon or Half Marathon training but in maintenance as far as running is concerned and am trying to focus more on building more muscle mass which is hard to do while keeping a running base of 20-30 miles a week. But if I want to improve my racing times next year I can't let my running base go (would really like to qualify for Boston next year)
We recently built a house and just moved in so I no longer have access to a gym ( had one where I previously lived). Dh wants to turn a room in our basement into a gym. I'm in DESPERATE need of advice on what I can do for legs considering I only have dumbells right now and the only thing I'm doing for legs is hill running. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Gotta get going and get my 4 mile run in. Hope everyone has a wonderful week.

Hi and Welcome!!!
First off I want to say you look sooo amazing!!! I only pray I can look as good as you after kids, never mind now!!!
Ya running and bbing dont really go hand in hand. but you have quite a bit of muscle on you, so it really doesnt seem to be hurting you too much!!
well with just dumb bells you can do squats, split squats, lunges, reverse lunges, walking lunges, the list goes on!

Wow you look great!!!!
I'll be excited to follow your journal. I hear you on the running/bbing thing. It's hard to do both. I wanted to do a half marathon for awhile, but had knee issues and decided to go back to lifting. But I found while I was training for that, trying to do both was really difficult!!!!
Have a great week!

Got my run in and hopefully get in a kicka$$ workout in a couple of hours. I've really got to figure when I can get my lower body workouts in. Work is taking alot of my energy lately since I'm getting home so late and not getting the sleep I need. Oh and can I say this cold weather BITES! It wouldn't be so bad ( I think) if it wasn't so freaken windy. Didn't want to go running this morning but I did after reading katie's aka pallardyk journal and seing her run in the snow. If ya happen to read this Katie THANKS!
Ediet= forgot pictures lol
MCJ, Sorry you had knee issue's while half marathon training that totally bites! Hope you have a great week as well!
MM, Thanks though my journal will probably bore people to tears lol. I'm not that great of a writer. As far as my legs. I'm looking to build more muscle. Not sure they really need to be much leaner (I'll post a couple pictures) though my backside could be. You don't look like you need any tips!
Jenny, Hi and thanks for the welcome! Thanks for the tips. I totally forgot about lunges since I haven't done them in awhile . Squats with dumbells are definetly doable just have to incorporate them into my workout.

I sooo give you guys credit that run outside in the snow and winter!! I hate IT!
What do you think your bodyfat is at? Have you had it measured? I think you are at a perfect level of leaness, and one I hope to attain next summer after my bulk I am doing now

I'm so glad you started a journal!
So did you do any type of exercise/running before 2 yrs ago? Or just totally new to the whole thing?
How old are your kids?
Your legs ROCK!
What's your training schedule like right now? Diet?

Workout DONE!! Tomorrow I've gotta get a leg workout prepared and done since I don't have to work tomorrow night. Todays workout was like this
Concentration curls 3x8
Hammer curls 3x8
Single arm row 3x8
deadlifts 3x8
shoulder press 3x8
lat raises 3x8
flat dumbell flies 3x8 ( on stability ball)
Dumbell press 3x8 (on stability ball)
dumbell kickbacks 3x8
overhead tricep extenstions 3x8
I plan on switching things up within the next couple weeks.
Jenny: As far as my bodyfat is, I'm not sure. I get readings from my moron (omron) anwhere from 9.6-11.7 . If I ever get to a gym I may get it tested (if I think they know what they are doing lol) Have fun bulking!
Soon2B: I never ran before ( well other than at recess time in elementry school lol) 2 years ago and I did weight lift for a year or so in the early 90's. I pretty much winged it back then. My children are 16 ( soon to be 17) 15 (soon to be 16) 14 years old and 2 5 year olds.
My training schedule right now has been upperbody 3-4 times a week and running 4-5 days a week 4 of which are hill days. Now that I am no longer Marathon training I will be adding legs in but only once a week. As far as diet, well I try to keep it as clean as possible ( though the past couple weeks have SUCKED) I try to eat at least 2300 calories a day more if I do a long run. My ratio's are probably (haven't been tracking the past few weeks) 50/30/20 (carbs, protein, fat) though I'm thinking of going back to 40/40/20. Thanks for the compliments!

Hi Pam,
Welcome! I can't believe you have 5 kids...you look fabulous and an inspiration to any woman with even 1 child let alone 5! I will be fun watching your progress. As far as leg exercises at home...I find that doing squats against a wall with the stability ball against my back works really well along with weighted wall sits. That's all I can think of at the moment I'm sure more will come to me later in the day. Take care!

Well between my 4 mile run this morning and my afternoon legworkout my legs feel like TOAST! Tomorrow's run ought to be interesting.
Yesterday everything went great UNTIL I got home from work. Dh mentioned that he had gotten new ice cream and Reece's Pieces. OMG I'm a sucker for that combination. Needless to say I had a nice big bowl. I think he was trying to make up for the fact that the other night when I had planned on an ice cream cheat there wasn't much left ( due to him and kids). I've really gotta work on my will power this week. I'm looking at gaining lean mass not fat and sweets is NOT the way to get it. Maybe I'll buy some more muscle milk to keep in the refridgerator for when I want something sweet after work.

Mmm..that ice cream combo sounded SOOO yummy!!!!!
By the way you look in your avatar, and all the running you do...I'd say a little ice cream wouldn't hurt..
Isn't it so cold running in the AM...I'm such a wimp when it comes to that!!!

Thanks MM!!
Ok my a$$ is so freaken sore! Guess it hasn't been getting much of a workout lately lol. Legs on the other hand are a little sore but not a whole lot. My morning run ought to be interesting.
I weighed myself after waking up and I'm down to 124.4 I'm kind of shocked though I guess I shouldn't be. Thought the weight gain I had this past week or two was due to lifting and my ice cream cheats not because of TOM. Guess I need to monitor my weight for the next week to make sure I'm getting enough calories in. I probably need to add a couple hundred more calories (at least) due to increase activity at work. And to think in summer of 2004 I wanted to get down to 110. What the hell was I thinking?

Oh it's heavenly. Problem is I would eat it every single night and that ISN"T good lol. Seems I can't just do a little lol.
OMG running in the am is so freaken cold! You should see me though. I go out with long running tights, long sleave Nike running shirt, dh's wind jacket, hat, and gloves. I must be a very attractive sight lol NOT!

Thanks Irish! I never had problems with weight until AFTER having my twins in 2001. I gained over 70 lbs with them and didn't loose the weight until the summer of 2004.
Got my run in this morning and a KICKA$$ workout done this afternoon. I am SO SORE! I'm feeling stuffed and ready for a nap. Unfortunatly somehow I can't fit a nap into my schedule. Of course I can fit getting online in it though lol. Tomorrow is day for R&R (not sure how you can r&r when your catching up on house work lol). Still can't believe my oldest will be 17 tomorrow. I really don't feel that old lol HOWEVER I did a few years ago before I got fit.

I gained @ 70 lbs with my first baby. What was I thinking? I don't know! But it gave me really bad stretch marks. Either you didn't get any, or you have a good remedy for making them go away (in which case you would have to share!)! Do you have a secret remedy or are you just a lucky woman??

Hmmm, ok. I got that too. Mine is not just low though. I've got loose skin around my navel too Dangit, oh well, I thought maybe I found answers, but I guess misery loves company, right? LOL! No, really it doesn't make me miserable, but I would love to make it go away
