Yes, the battery powers the car, the alternator recharges the battery. The alternator is only on when the engine is running so yes, running the engine recharges the battery through the alternator.

Just running it will make the alternator do it's thing. No need to put it into gear.

Speaking as a guy who lives in MN Where you have to know these kinds of things for a practical matter, when the cold weather kills someone's battery or yours, and you have to jump it and recharge from the dead...

Yes simply letting your car idle will recharge the battery... But it does a pissy slow job of doing it compared to if you take it out drive it around and get it on the high way for 10-20 minutes.

The practical reality is that when you kill your battery, from cold, leaving the lights on or what-have-you, that if it's cold you should idle the car for 5-10 mins, just to get a nice minimum charge built up and let the engine get warmed up... Then take it out and drive it at Highway speeds for say 10-20 minutes...

If you just leave it sit to idle, depending on the temperature, engine size, and battery quality it could take up to an hour to charge at idle.

Yes, if the engine is running the alternator is working which will bring your voltage levels in your car to about 14-14.4, which is more than enough to charge your battery.

I'm not sure what effect cold temperature is having on your engine/alternator, but brining the RPM of the engine up will raise the voltage and increase the ammount of potential amperage output of the alternator. According to the numbers, whether your driving or sitting at idle revving it shouldn't matter, just the RPM
