Steel cut oats

Can somebody explain what exactly these are? I was at the store looking for them and I guess I don't know exactly what they are. Sad, I know.

Just get old fashioned oats, dont get the overly processed ones. I think a good rule of thumb is to get the cheapest brand you can buy, because the instant ones are expensive.

its a little hard to explane what they look like. The best I can come up with is it looks like a brown grain of rice. It dosent really look like that but its similar to that shape.

It is hard to find stores that sell it, you will never find it in bulk, usually they are just in little 1lb bags or something.

cheers

Steel-Cut Oats

Whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are golden in colour and resemble mini rice particles.

How are they different from Rolled Oats? Rolled oats are flake oats that have been steamed, rolled, re-steamed and toasted. Due to all of this additional processing they have lost some of their natural taste, goodness and texture.

What makes Steel-cut Oats so special? Grains are essential to a healthy lifestyle and form the foundation of the food pyramid. Steel-cut oats are inherently full of nutritional value and are high in B-Vitamins, calcium, protein and fiber while low in salt and unsaturated fat. One cup of steel-cut oatmeal contains more fiber than a bran muffin and twice as much fibre as Cream of Wheat.

The FDA endorsed Oats in the fight against Heart Disease and certain cancers. In August 1999, the FDA in the U.S. issued a further endorsement of oats. It authorized a new claim that will allow companies to promote the benefits of whole grains in relation to heart disease and certain cancers. It indicated that diets that are rich in whole grains, such as oats, may reduce the risk of these conditions.

Oatmeal is the only food that naturally contains GLA (gamma linolenic acid) an essential fatty acid critical to the body's production of the favorable eicosanoids (PGE1 - prostaglandins). Eating steel-cut oats (very slow cooking) four times a week will provide you with a good supply of GLA.

Wholegrain Oats and Type 2 Diabetes - In the U.S. almost 16 million people suffer from Type 2 diabetes with as many as 625,000 new cases being diagnosed each year. A new 10-year study published in the American Journal of Public health indicated that eating oatmeal (a wholegrain cereal) on a regular basis can help to reduce the risk of Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes. The study showed that eating 1 serving of oatmeal (equivalent to 1 cup cooked) 2-4 times weekly resulted in a 16% reduction in risk of suffering from Type 2 diabetes. By increasing consumption of oatmeal to 5-6 times weekly, there was a corresponding 39% reduction in the risk of onset of Type 2 diabetes.

What are you talking about? Steel cut oats have more nutritional value than rolled oats because they aren't processed as much.

Yup like everyone said. The rolled oats have been steamed and compressed. Steel cut are more nutritional. I am yet to try them though

Steel cut oats have more nutritional value per volume. Rolled oats are steel cut oats rolled through a giant steel drum and steamed so they cook quicker. If you do not have access to steel cut I recommend old fashioned rolled oats.

Here's my copy and paste recipe for you guys and where you can get steel cut oats in the U.S.

If anyone is having a hard time eating oats or getting in enough calories, sttop and listen to this post. Grinding steel cut oats up in a coffee grinder and throwing them in a shake is by far the easiest way to slam them down and not to mention you can make some extremely cheap weight gainer shakes that are very healthy.

Step 1:
Buy a coffee grinder. They are cheap and you can buy them almost anywhere. I bought one at Target but anyplace like Walmart will have them. Here's an example:

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...sin=B000BRLXUI

Step 2:
Go to this website and use the store locator to find a retailer close to you to purchase this product. This stuff is gold. 560 calories per cup and the store by my house sells it for .99 cents a pound!

https://www.bobsredmill.com/catalog/...product_ID=279

Look at the nutritional value on this stuff:

Nutritional Information for
Steel Cut Oats
Serving Size 1/4 cup(40g)
Servings Per Container 17.00
Calories 140.00
Calories from Fat 25.00
Total Fat 2.50g
Saturated Fat 0.50g
Trans Fat 0.00g
Cholesterol 0.00mg
Sodium 0.00mg
Total Carbohydrate 27.00g
Dietary Fiber 4.00g
Sugars 0.00g
Protein 6.00g
Ingredients whole grain oats

Step 3:
Grind oats up with coffee grinder and throw them in your favorite shake. If they oats are took thick in your shake just add more milk/water.

EVERY day I have serveral of the following shakes.

16oz ice cold skim milk
1/2 cup ground steel cut oats
1 scoop of ON whey (chocolate)

571 calories
77 grams of carbs
53 grams of protein
7 grams of fat.

Obviously you can experiment with whatever you want to throw in there. Any fruits, peanut butter, etc etc. work perfectly.

Talk about a cheap, high quality shake that is easy to make and takes under a minute to drink.
