You will have more success with incline work when it comes to working clavicular region (upper chest).

nope! dips work lower chest and tris. if you want upper chest, get on the incline bench and do some presses or flies.

Yeah, more than flat bench anyways. Much better for aesthetic purposes than flat bench, but incline DB press is still king.

Dips work the entire chest. The last few posts are right, you can't isolate a part of the chest, it always works as a whole. You can put more emphasis on one part than the other, but they still work together.

Maybe I shouldve been more precise.

If you want to hit your upper chest, dips are NOT the best way to do it. Dont waste your time with an inferior exercise.

I was just wondering cause i only work with bar and i do all kinds of pullups and ab work on the bar, Then i do dips and incline pushups..

So let me get this straight a regular pushup. Can work the lower upper and middle at the same time .I guess then that means that the chest will grow very slowly.

u see that link thats what the dips do . It works the middle and the lower
now i should add incline pushups and im good

The part of the pecs worked by dips is entirely dependant upon your form doing it. Weight proportions vary, so some lean forward more than others. I always thought it did mid-lower to be honest.

Dips work mostly the lower pecs because of the line of force of the exercise.

Look; people that are going to make anatomical statements need to friggin' know their anatomy.

Even the most hardcore "non-contiguous innervation" touter acknowledges the pecs have two separate sections functionally

THE PECS HAVE TWO MAIN INNERVATIONS, CLAVICULAR (UPPER) AND LOWER (STERNAL).

They therefore can be RELATIVELY isolated.

    Period.

I won't even go into the compartmentalization/partitioning/myosin-actin pairing optimization argument here, because I don't need to.

Yes, you can indeed. It would not be wise to assume dips as an upper chest exercises. However, techinically, they do play a minute role. Kind of like how the lats play in bench pressing..

when I do dips I always feel it most in my triceps and in the lower portion of my chest, though I do feel the movement throughout the whole chest there's more emphasis on the bottom, probably my form.

Dips can very well be used as a chest exercise; chest dips

As for the thread starter, see it like this; the more incline your bench, than the lower the weight you can use, this goes for most people. Most people can do a lot more weight on the decline bench press as compared to the flat and incline, chest dips are basically an upright decline bench press if you ask me, so you can use more weight (if you include your bodyweight). Unless offcourse you weigh very heavy, than it's it still goes, but you might not be able to do a bodyweigth dip yet.

Just start with bodyweight tomorrow and add weight, basically ramping the weights uo if you will.

Your words were "no, not even a little bit"

    They were wrong. Radically wrong.

True, I said that, and I may have been generalizing too much. Far from radically wrong, but generalizing nonetheless. So, then I said:

I dont feel dips are a worthwhile upper chest developer. Neither do you. We are both right. Actually read the whole thread next time buddy.

    Thanks

Awsome triceps exercise that also hits the pecs reasonably well. Upper pec involvement is minimal.

Decline presses > Dips for chest.
