First of all is it safe? If it is safe, do I need to buy a special backpack or can I use any old backpack?

i don't know why it wouldn't be, as long as you aren't doing it with enough weight to crush you. Just make sure your backpack straps are tight enough so it doesn't slip side to side or to your head. Probably a backpack that came equipped with a waist strap would be the best but as long as you keep your body level anything would do.

No exercise is absolutely safe. Use something you can roll off of you. Also keep in mind safelty getting into the pushup position.
Generally stuff like this is better for high reps or one-armed or doing tricks so you can safely get out.
If you're going for small RoM low rep high weight exercises, you'd use a smith machine.

How about bench press? I hear you can lay on a bench, and hold a bar with weights on it, and move it up and down. Its sort of like push-ups ????
Pullups Max reps: 40 reps
Max weighted pullup:
206.2 lbs x 1 rep
165 lbs x 6 reps
135 lbs x 8 reps
100 lbs x 14 reps
Bench: 365 lbs
Squat: 405 lbs
Deadlift: 505 lbs
Press:225 lbs

It's a bit different. First off, grip's different (flat bent palm versus straight palm or slightly bent gripping bar).
The path the bar takes might be different than what you'd get from doing a pushup too. So, you should do both.
Bench press is easier to microload though, so it's more of a staple, plus easier to get into start position at added weights.

you can just use an ordinary weight belt to hold the weight on. I usually put a weight belt around my chest loosely then grab a 25-45 lb weight and slip it in the weight belt (so the weight is actually on my chest) then go through the ordinarny push up movements and when im done i can just remove the weight belt and it's all good. Hopefully that helps, it worked out great for me when i didn't have a bench (or mroe specific a spotter).

i went to lowes and bought a 50lb bag of sand. I bought some sandbags too and sorted the 50lbs to 3 bags. When i do pullups i put the batgs in an old jansport and wear the bag in front of me so my center of gravity is right under the bar... this feels even better than doing it with a weighted belt because the tendency to lean is there too much.

Since my bench is broken, and I don't have time every chest day to go to the gym, I load up around 90+lbs in my old school backpack and do push-ups [8 reps; 9 sets]. I know this probably sounds odd to most, but it's all I can do when I have no bench.
Seems to be working in increasing my pushup strength, aswell.
Oh, and I don't lay my palms on the floor. I use 2 aerobics dumbells [not sure if that's the correct name for them], my hands wrapped around them as if they're a barbell.
