Substitute for Birthday Cake?
8 people in our office are on diets! We've got 3 birthdays to celebrate in the next 2 weeks. Most of them just turn down a piece of cake now. Can anybody think of an alternative that won't cost too much more than a cake would? Thanks!

I'd be happy if they handed out cans of tuna with a fork.

re
Personally i like to be tempted...they announced "free cake and ice cream in the large conference room" at work yesterday...i didnt even move, didnt think twice about it. If the people celebrating the birthdays arent on the diet, im sure they would appreciate the cake....they could bring it home to there family if they wanted to. Or if everyone is on a diet, try some fat free ice cream sandwiches (im pretty sure someone makes them).

I like to bake stuff around holidays, and in an attempt to make my sweets healthier in a clandestine way, I substitute the ****tier ingredients. Use cake mix, apple sauce, and egg whites. I guarantee to you that it tastes exactly the same, my family and friends have never realized it's not full of all that extra unnecessary fat. Maybe one of your coworkers can bake a cake like that the night before, and not feel bad about indulging in a little piece. Hell, you could put natty pb on top instead of frosting.

I find it funny that people think that a piece of cake here or there is going to make their ass balloon out and destroy their diet, lol.

The other day I walked past a pizza restaurant and even though it makes no sense, I seriously suspect that I may have gained weight simply by having smelled the pizza . . .

Probly would
The greater public seem to have some wacked out ideas on what a diet should be. That being said, whatever sort of fad diet they are doing is probly a quick fix type thing that if they did eat a piece of cake their ass would balloon.

Thanks for the responses. Haven't decided yet, but at least I've got some ideas to work with now.

I make a really nice oat/protein bar 'cake'. Add a bunch of fruit - orange + rind, blueberries, blackberries and make it moist. Then just a thin coating of chocolate over the top. The family loves it, so I bake that for most of the birthdays.
You do need some experimentation to get the recipe down to where it really is sweet and more cake-like than protein-bar like - I've posted my recipe a couple of times.
Good luck.

angel food cake would be a decent alternative to the usual full fat cakes. Although it may be high in sugar, one or two pieces of it wouldnt be too bad, maybe even make a frosting for it by mixing good flavored whey powder and and a little milk.
