Washing Canned Tuna to reduce sodium levels

How would you go about doing this? I heard of some natural BBers who do this to reduce sodium levels in canned tuna (preferably chunky light tuna in water).

What kind of filter or skimmer do you use? I've never done this sort of thing before (and it's suppose to be warm water).

Is Mercury a water-soluble chemical like certain water-soluble vitamins? You think it would help to hot-wash tuna to reduce mercury levels a bit (I wish).

I havent ever tried this method before. But in terms of sodium, I don't really see the point. It's only 300mg for a can. If your on your final week of contest prep and restricting sodium levels than you should just choose a different source of protein.

no, mercury is not water soluable, and doing that is a waste of time. Tuna has such low relative sodium levels compared to soooo many other foods. Unless you eat fast food, chinese food, or canned soups all the time, every day, you do NOT need to worry about sodium. AT ALL

Why not buy the low sodium tuna?

The sodium in there is very minor. Drinking your 1 - 2 gallons of water a day will take care of that.

typical small cans of tuna are (250mgx2.5 servings) 700mg sodium for a measly 150 calories, sorry thats quite a bit, but go ahead eat up, same goes with all canned and frozen foods... wash it off in a fine strainer. if your eating 2000 calories+ a day of natural food you'll have all the sodium u ever need w/o ANY added sodium.

u can get rid of over 3/4 of the soduim in regualr tuna if u wash it really well.. open the lid w/ can opener and then press down and drain all the water.. then remove lid run under water put lid back and drain again.. do this 5 or 6 times and way over half the sodium will be gone.

Wow, so it is possible to strain sodium from tuna. Unfortunately, I'm all out of tuna cans and have been resorting to Sardines in Soybean Oil. But when I get around to it, I'll try straining it like you said. Thanks.
