Dreams
i was looking at a post abt some posts abt REM cycle and know it does play a factor in recovering muscle. My question is does having dreams during ur sleeping affect this cycle and if it does, does it hinder any bodybuilding gains?

Actually, I think having dreams does in fact hinder muscle growth. This is because when you have very vivid dreams, you are not fully deep in sleep, but somewhere in between awake and asleep. Your body grows fastest when it is in a deep sleep, because when the brain is not active it can focus more on regenerating and recovering the body. I'm not really sure you have any control over whether or not you dream though, so it doesn't really matter anyway. Just get lots of sleep.
BTW, I was just totally bull****ting. Lol, I don't actually know anything about this subject. You should still get a lot of sleep though.

having dreams has been linked to the rem stage of sleep which is where most of your growth occurs.
so yes, dreaming is actually better for your growth. but its not always an indicator

Uh, REM sleep = deep sleep.
REM sleep = dreams.
So when you say dreams mean you aren't in deep sleep... you are COMPLETELY wrong.

Rapid eye movement sleep. REM sleep occurs in brief spurts of increased activity in the brain and body. REM is considered the dreaming stage of sleep. It is characterized by the darting of the eyes under the eyelids.
REM is good... dreams are good mmkay

Totally wrong, yes, its the opposite. REM sleep is the closest you are to being awake. You dont dream much during the first 3 hours of sleep. You only remember your dreams when you wake up if you awake during the REM stage...you wont remember anything if you wake up during the 2nd, 3rd or 4th stage.

You dream every night, you just can't always remember them, So i can't see them affecting growth.

Everyone needs REM sleep along with regular sleep. When we REM Sleep we only do it for like 60- 90 min of our day which is needed. The rest of the night you are in a stage 4 delta deep sleep. This will stimulate muscle recovery. But both are needed in order to be fully recovered and ready for you next intense workout.

When we're first falling asleep, we drift in and out of sleep and can be awakened easily. This progresses into the first deep sleep of the night, and the time in which there are changes in the regulatory influences and growth hormone peaks.23 In deep sleep we're almost in a coma, eye movements and muscle activity stop altogether and brain waives become slower until in the deepest sleep, the brain is producing delta waves exclusively. It appears that it's in this mode that your body goes into a repair and rebuild or "rejuvenation" mode.

Even the quickest look through it confirms my knowledge.

Sleep is one of those things we don't understand fully. I say don't worry about it and try to get atleast 8 hours a night and you will be fine.

you dream every single night.
It's just whether or not you remember them in the morning that makes it seem like you did or not.

ok time to set things straight..
there's 4 stages to sleep:
1) you dont even really realize you're asleep. this is when youre in bed and time lapses of like 2-3 minutes at a time happen while your thought process is going crazy and you pop back into reality and look at your clock or something
2) when you finally make it to stage 2, you're not dreaming or anything, you're just "sleeping" this stage is usually the farthest you get when taking a little nap
3) deep sleep. the body doesnt move, you are intensely sleeping and it will take a sledgehammer to wake you up
4) REM sleep. "dream sleep". you have a dream or dreams, your body moves around a little, and your eyes dart around everywhere
the cycle takes about 2 hours, and most people go through it like 4 times a night, hence the reason you can wake up at 3 in the morning and remember the dream you were having. if youre gonna wake up in the middle of the night, its almost always when the cycle is restarting, because as stated earlier, stage one is very light and even your body's motions can wake you up
now i dont know when the most muscle is repaired (i would guess 3-4) but i do know that in lab studies, rats who were deprived REM sleep and allowed to sleep all other stages of the cycle ended up dying a few weeks later, thus showing the importance that dream sleep really has
