I have been supplementing flaxseed oil for my omega 3 fats for over a year and I found it to be very beneficial. Recently I was told by a nutritionist (yea they usually talk crap) to stop taking flaxseed oil. He told me that a recent study showed that it can dramaticly increase a man's risk of getting prostate cancer!
Of course I was surprised to hear this so I did some googling and have found mixed opinions but I am not convinced. Some doctors say "Dont touch it! You could get prostate cancer", others say "Its the flaxseeds that are bad not the oil". Then other people are convinced it can cure prostate cancer. There doesnt seem to be any general consensus in the medical community whether or not it is safe and since there are so many clued up guys here I am wondering what people here think. Should we keep on taking flaxseed oil?
This is a bit worrying though-->
"The Prostate Forum lists six studies showing positive correlation between ALA (in serum, adipose tissue, and red blood cell membranes) and prostate cancer.
Of the six studies, one showed no correlation.3 One found a small (not statistically significant) positive correlation.4 Four studies found a strong positive correlation between ALA and prostate cancer.5,6,7,8 At least two other studies have also shown a correlation of alpha-linolenic acid with increased prostate cancer.9,10
According to Prostate Forum, several labs have found that ALA is one of the most powerful growth stimulants for human prostate cancer cells.2
The Prostate Forum has recommended against the use of flax oil by men with prostate cancer. Since flax oil is the richest readily available food source of ALA, the reasoning goes, this oil should cause the most prostate cancer."
