Both would be good undergrad degrees for an MBA. I'd bet a finance degree averages a better salary than an econ degree, if that's important to you.

I'm an econ major only because by the time I changed my major (from Pre-med) it was too late to get into my university's business school without staying an extra couple of semesters...I went with econ so i could graduate in time but I would've preferred finance.

    Econ is cool too though

Agreed. I was an Economics major. I would think that Econ would be better if you want some kind of post-grad degree like an MBA.

I'd like to know: What kind of careers typically fit most Economic majors?
The more mass you have, the more ass you get.
The more cash you make, the more class you get.

Finance if you want an easy, boring, and cheaper paying job. Economics if you want more money, and there's probably more speaking in Economics because it's more theorizing. In finance you're doing the actual work. Both are hard to get into because of the damn outsourcing.

I got a BA and a BS in Economics. My first job was for a Defense Contractor. They just wanted someone with a business-like degree. After a year there, I got a job as a consultant for manufacturing and distribution plants. Worked for a major firm for a few years, then went out on my own doing the same work for several years. I also owned a condo management small company I ran on the side.

But a person with an Econ degree can realistically attain the same jobs as those with finance degrees. I've had several classmates that were Econ majors that became loan officers, commercial loan officers, etc. at banks and investment firms.

Basically, just do whichever one you will enjoy, the jobs will come and be too similar later.

If you can do the math, go finance.

edit: some econ programs will prepare you for finance professional designation exams (MFM, CFA, CWM, CAM, etc), so it depends.

eh, I wouldn't worry about math exactly. You're never gong to encounter any math classes in a business degree like you would in engineering.

It's mostly pain in the ass accounting. Cost accounting tends to be a tough class for a lot of people. If you're good at accounting and seem to enjoy it, go for it.

You'll never encounter much math other than simple arithmatic in business majors. (Excluding college algebra and business calculus)

Suprisingly alot of people with Econ degrees end up in Law school. They tend to work out well due to the thought process involved in alot of economic theories. Not sure what you mean by top, as in most common or higher pay/profile etc. Most CFO/CEO's tend to have either econ or finance background.

As far as which to get, if you intend to get your MBA or do grad work I would go with Econ. Generally speaking it's alot easier to get into an economics focused position if you have that further education, and as such the pay is better as well. However, with an econ degree you can end up doing most finance jobs anyhow, I would just focus your electives on finance related classes so that you're better prepared if you decide to go that route. Or, do what I did and get your BS in both.

That's absolutely right. It's one of the best undergrad studies to have if applying to Law School.

Seems to me, econ and finance degrees have the same math requirments until you get into the nitty gritty of the degrees...

what would the advantages be of a BS over a BA. I'm not a big fan of math so I would prefer a BA but i wouldn't want only having a BA to hurt me for job opportunities. Also how hard would it be to double major, say if i wanted to major in economics and psychology.

I am sure some schools offer both, at my school an econ degree was a B.A. and finance was a B.B.A.
