    Engineering and Bodybuilding

Just wondering if anybody in college is majoring in engineering and trying to bodybuild. Both require a lot of time and dedication and are the not the simplest tasks when combined. They seem to be antagonistic to each other.

I'm majoring in chemical engineering and getting my butt kicked trying to manage both. My roommate, an electrical engineer, is also having the same scenario. I'm wondering if anybody has graduated with an engineering degree and took bodybuilding as a hobby. If so, any pointers?

I am in my 3rd year majoring as an electrical engineer. Let me tell you, it took some major revamping of time management. Basically I lift, eat, work, and study 6 days a week and save the women and drinking for once a week. That is what it takes. Keep away from the games or whatever distracts you. Better yet...Take away that distraction to not tempt you.

4th year aerospace engineer, all I do is study, sleep, eat, train then repeat

It is all about time management as louisdorkman says

example, I am also studying technical german for engineers so when I do my morning cardio at 7am I print out a list of german vocab to learn whilst doing it etc etc

^^^ damn dude ure young for a fourth year - massive place outs?

4th yr electrical engineer here - its kicks my arse on several occocasions but its do-able if your strict enough. My secret's just not busying ure self with anything else - come back from class - shower and hit the books first thing - no ******, no tv, no comp games, - get my meals outta the way and sleep before 12. wake up at 6 - gym - pre class reading - class from 9- whenever it's till - if you have breaks inbetween classes use that time on campus to get more work done.

once my thesis was done i came here onto misc and am going over board hell picked up quake.

some ppl say bb is their life - but for us kids it has to be ENGINEERING first then bb later - it keeps u sane!

I'm just wondering if there's nasty grading curve for the bodybuilding engineers out there. At UCLA, it's a bit turn off, and really I'm about to change my major to chemistry due to the competiveness. For example, in my thermodynamics class, first midterm was an average of 90/100, with a standard deviation of 10. I got an 80. Basically one half the class got 100 and the other half 80. I get a C, they get an A even though I did B work. Makes me want to puke.

As for time management, it's not easy since one little thing can shift your time scenario, ie very difficult homework, not understanding a lecture.

Any recommendations on how to cut time here and there? I batch cook every Saturday to save time. I plan out my meals, workouts and even free time (comes out to 2 hours ever week) and it literally seems impossible to seriously do well in engineering and bodybuild. I've given up TV/DVDs, I've given up going out on Saturday nights and I've given up a lot for the two goals I want. Just it seems unreasonable to put in some much time and get back so little. The risk versus reward is unbalance one would say.

i was a biomedical engineering student, studying biomechanics--which actually was pretty synergistic with bbing/working out. i did a lot of swimming, was great for relieving acedemic related stress & anxiety.

uhm you may want to make use of mid term breaks and weekends - and don't leave stuff till the harder lectures - you may not have understood lecture 9 lets say but ure self only covered everything till lect 6 - then you've got 3 lects to cover till you can understand lect 10. Engr does have short falls everywhere but don't waste ure time with needless things. Like you don't have to read an entire book to get through things - get selected chapters, do selected problems etc - proffessors know its impossible for all of us to complete every text book and all problems in the problems set - we've got a tonne of classes to balance.

also leave the easier stuff till the end and start with the harder stuff - when you sit down to study.

And its perfectly fine to take some time off bb - i went to the gym for a grand total of a month this month -

don't waste too much time with cooking, you don't have to have grilled chicken eveyr week - plus reheated food tastes bland after a while. canned tuna is a godsend, protein shakes - stir fried veggies - these are quick fixes when time is short ... eat healthy and frequently

i can't think of anything but that should be a helpful push

I am in 4th year Electrical engineering.. I have worked out the entire time. I go 4 days a week after classes. I don't see how working out is hurting your grades? I mean everyone has a free hour during their day. Spend it at the gym, no big deal.

yeah im an engineering major, its kinda hard for me though, on thursdays, fridays, i gotta prepare those meals the day before cuz im in class from 8:00am- 6:00pm and after class i go to the gym, they are not the best workouts, my best workouts are on monday and tuesday cuz those days the stress of classes is alot lighter, and yeah for me it does take its toll. thats why i usually put leg day on thursday cuz its just a painful day so **** it, mine as well make it a day i dont like. wutever you cant always have a easy life, so suck it up for a few years get your degree graduate get a good job and by then im sure you will have it a bit easier. Sleep is a major problem for me, i used to go to bed at like 8:30pm, and wake up at 5:00am, i was real dedicated, real hardcore i took my trainning and diet very very seriously, im slacking off now in all departments, my grades have been falling, i was averaging A's in all my classes, now there down to a C and had to drop math, kinda getting deppressed as well, im really trying to finish this semester up hoping ill survive, trying to get to that finish line, almost there too, just a few more weeks :-)

General breakdown of Chemical Engineering Undergraduate

You'll have labs every year, pretty much.

    Freshmen:
    Calculus I/II
    General Chemistry I/II
    Physics I/II (Statics/Mechanics/Waves)
    English

    Sophmore:
    Calculus III/Linear Algebra/Differential Equations
    Organic Chemistry I/II
    Physics III/IV (Electricity/Magnestism, Modern)

    Junior:
    Chemical Processes
    Thermodynamics I/II
    Transport Phenomena (Mass/Heat)
    Numerical Analysis

    Senior:
    Process Dynamics/Control
    Process Economics/Analysis
    CAD Designing

Give or take some classes are added and what not. If you're a biomolecular/biochemical engineer, add in some biology classes and biochemistry classes.

Please note, bioengineering =! biochemical engineering. Bioengineering is more of a biologist trained in parts of electrical engineering. A biochemical/biolmolecular engineering is a biochemist trained in parts of mechanical engineering.

I know I should be taking my own advice but as the old saying goes, "Can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen." Engineering itself is a rigorous courseload, you take more math, science and analysis classes then your fellow science and humanities peers. Many concepts will not make sense by reading due to its discrete nature, you have to experience it so to say.

As I joke to my fellow peers, "Bring enough lubricant to ease the pain. Only time will heal the gaping hole."

As for time saving, I think it's more of shopping supplements and analyzing what they do is killing me. If I don't make it out of colleges, I'll go produce my own supplements *hah*. It's just the nerd in me but I tend to overanalyze my diet/supplements, that's probably what's killing me.

As for gym time, I tend to cardio 1 hour every other day and lift weights the following other days for 1.5 hours.

I batch cook my vegetables and grains. I have a Zojirushi Rice Cooker to make my brown rice/quinoa/oatmeal, so no watching/stirring is involved. Only thing I do grill everyday is chicken breasts, it's so dry reheating chicken breasts. I was reading Fitness RX (Think it was Fitness RX) and they had some good tips on reheating chicken breast to make it juicy. I also brought a toaster along and pop in some frozen bread, add some tuna with mustard/tabasco/EVOO/pepper and easy protein sandwich.

i organized my timetable so i have little breaks, only breaks i have are for the gym (i joined the uni gym). as for keeping up with work i come home and read over what we went through during the day for about an hour, then if im not going to work ill work on assignments and stuff. after im done for the night i usually prepare some of my meals for tomorrow so all i have to do is bang it in the oven or whatever instead of starting from scratch. this way i usually have weekends free to do whatever. i know engineering can be tough, but aslong as you keep up to date and like that guy said to concentrate on what you're having trouble understanding first helps. also go to all of your tute classes so you can get help on the stuff you dont understand, that way you'll get an answer straight away on your problem instead of wasting 10 hours at home racking your brain over it.

I am an arts student...I have seen what an eng. student goes through and I am glad I am not in that program (any stream) as I wouldn't do the work, I am not that dedicated.

At my school it takes most people at least 5 years to complete the 4 year program because there is so much to do that it is impossible to keep up. One guy I know is in a 5th year and has done summer school twice trying to get it done.
I am not trying to be better than you, just better than myself

Also, I'm wondering the setting of your schools for the other engineer majors.

    UCLA: http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/...=qfs&word=ucla

It's hard to find help when you're stuck in a public school that's overpacked in my opinion. If there is one thing I wish I could do was go to a less crowded school. Feels like a small fish in big pond scenario, especially with the student body.

P.S. - ON's Fruit Punch Whey Protein isn't so bad. Taste decent but mixes ok.
