Tough Question for the REALLY Smart

Got this by e-mail today. Not sure of the correct answer! Please post your answers here and I will forward them:

    ---------
I purchased the Chondroitin Mix primarily because my husband was recently diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

I was looking for a product that contained the N-Acetyl Glucosamine plus the popular two ingredients, Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin and was very pleased when I found your product.

I am a former public practicing nutritionist, so I can understand some of the technical information regarding supplements.

    My question is:

I understand why Manganese is in the product and know what it does. However, my concern is the form (aspartate) and the amount (500 Mg). I know that Manganese is needed in only minute quantities but normally that's in the form of gluconate or as amino acid chelate sulfate.

My husband and I both take vitamins and mineral supplements plus, a ginseng formula and CoQ10. We both took the Chondroitin product (he took it for his arthritis and I took it for an old "trick-knee" problem, and we both had "strange" reactions. I immediately felt "pressure" on my brain and had a headache (I very, very rarely get a headache and became dizzy and could not focus-mentally.). I stopped taking the product after only three days because I became "scared". My husband reacted with a little more than a mild depression (and he's not the type at all to get depressed), and Ie thought it would be best for him to stop taking the product after seven days until we could talk with you and find out if other people have this type of reaction. My husband has taken Glucosamine and Chondroitin products previously with no side effects.

However, I couldn't believe how much better my knee felt, and my husband's arthritis became better.

So, what could have caused the reactions? Is it the large amount of managnese in the form of aspartate?

We really would like to take the product and hope you might can give us some insight.

Thanks very much for your time.
    --------

    !?!?!?!

That would seem sort of odd. L-Aspartic Acid is a non-essential amino acid from which orotic acid is derived. The aspartates are highly efficient mineral transport systems and have better absorption rates than mineral salts or mineral amino acid chelates. How much of the 500mg is actually yielding Manganese? How much is aspartic acid? I know if combined with b-vitamins it can make you have a better sense of "well being". So it would surprise me that she would have her husband experiencing depression. I don't know man. This is stuff off the top of my head. I'll do some reading and see what I can find.

Well i'm no expert in glucosamine i don't know why they would put that much maganese in a product. The only thing i can think of is maybe it helps pull more fluid into the joint area? I'm not aware of how manganese affects the brain however. I'll try asking my biochem professor.
    Peace

If I remember right it is used in the formation of cartilage and synovial fluid of the joints....helps with bone synthesis too.

    500mg would be toxic

The product in question contains 500mcg of Manganese (as aspartate)

My guess would be she has an allergy to shellfish, but I'm not her doctor.

Glucosamine is a nutritional supplement that is extracted from crab, lobster or shrimp shells. If you are allergic to shellfish, consult your doctor before deciding to take glucosamine. In most cases, however, allergies are caused by proteins in shellfish, not chitin, a carbohydrate from which glucosamine is extracted.

It could have been a slight toxicity issue with that much manganese. The link doesn't not go into detail, but it may help, According to the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council an established dosage would be about 2mg, and according to this link the dosage can be increased up to
    six-fold per doctor's advice.
