Hi. Had a sore throat yesterday and almost a fever. Down with a cold. Although I am 80% recovered currently, I reckon I will just rest 2 more days. Considering that I maintain my bodyweight level and sleep well, will I find my general strength decrease when I return to lifting again? I am in the middle of some routine, and hopefully my strength level is not messed up when I lift again 2 days later. If you experienced this kind of situation before, it could help if you tell me opinions. Thanks.

Does being sick for a few days affect strength when lifting again?

For me it depends on if I keep eating enough. Earlier this week I got very ill (maybe it was some food poisoning from bad meat at a restruant, or simply the flu) for the first time in years. Today I went in and benched 275x2 and my max is only 285 so I think I did not lose much strength. However, I did notice a drastic lose of stamina and had to drop dips from my friday routine because I was out of gas.
I believe you need extra calories to fuel your system and deal with illness. My philosophy is to eat my way out of any obstacle, including illness. Recently I was ill for a few days, but I literally force fed myself even though I felt like I was going to puke. I did this because previously when I was sick, or when others are sick, they tend to not eat much; not eating plus illness equals alot of lost strength. More importantly, stay hydrated. Drink more water than you think you need.
Don't rush back into the gym until you feel better. You may have one or two bad sessions from a short layoff, but its more important to recover from the illness. The weight will be there when you get well.Last edited by JoeyTS; 11-04-2006 at 02:01 AM.
