How do Squats help make your Biceps bigger???

How do Squats help make your Biceps bigger??? Ive heard lots of people saying that doing squats - which is a leg exercise - helps build your biceps muscles. Can someone explain to me I dont really get the connection. THanks.

They, along with teh deadliftz exercise, increase teh test and growth hormone.

Seriously, they don't directly, but they do load the entire body which will help everything else grow providing that it is receiving direct stimulation.

I cut down on curls and started doing weighted chin and pull ups. That made my biceps grow a lot more. I also liked arnolds cheat curls.

Of course squats make your biceps bigger. Do you think the plates magically appear on the bar by themselves?

glad to see someone here knows something about biomechanics/biology.

basically, the more overload your body takes on from lifting weights, the more muscles grow. your legs have more muscle mass than any other part of the body, meaning that when you work them out, it causes a significant production of testosterone (and possibly other growth hormones), which will in turn effect every muscle.

let's be honest, ignoring paraplegics, how many people have you seen - ever - that had skinny legs and large upper bodies? it's not a coincidence.

halfway. just because you have a small lower body doesnt mean you are gonna have a small upper body. go to any club or any place with a bar. you can see it everywhere. its just very unusual to see someone with some decent wheels who doesnt have **** for an upperbody.

gh will be supplied to the muscles being worked. the biceps are not under any stress in a squat so why would the body try to repair a muscle that hasn't been worked?

Hormones are concentrated in the blood, not muscle, therefore the production/release of hormones affects the entire body. Squats/deads/other major compounds place the most stress on the body and therefore stimulate the greatest hormonal response. Assuming you are training other areas of the body, they will benefit from these compounds despite not being directly stressed by them.

but will muscles that have not been worked directly use the hormones that have been released? as i said before i don't think that the body would be designed to repair something that doesn't need to be repaired.

You're completely missing the point here. All of this is assuming that your biceps (for example) are being stressed. For example:

Say you do 5 sets of curls 3 times a week, and no other exercises. Your biceps are being directly stimulated, and are growing, but not at an optimal rate. Then you add squats to your routine, causing an improvement in your blood hormone profile. Because of the additional muscle building hormones circulating in your bloodstream, your biceps are now able to recover better from the curls. So even though squatting did not directly stimulate your biceps, it did improve their growth.

Good stuff in this thread. Not sure how valid it is, but it's still good stuff.

They don't. Every douchebag curler in the gym with big ripped arms and skinny girl legs is proof of this.

Yall should listen to this guy. Can't be explained much better. I'll try to sumarize a little....

Squats won't do crap for your biceps if you don't work biceps. A mucle does have to be broken down to repair. However if you are working arms, then adding the bigger lifts like deads and squats will help your body produce more hormones for repair, and your biceps will benefit from this.

So yes Squats will increase mass in every recovering muscle indirectly.

I'll leave with a quote that fits here.. "Shut up and squat."

whoa 28 replies! thanks guys, especially for the biochemical explanation. Squats elevating GH and Testosterone makes a lot of sense.. and it would probably help overall growth of all muscles not only biceps.. and I do Squats and Biceps on the same day, that probably insures that GH will act even more on the biceps. Makes sense.. thanks.
