How about a partial tear (no surgery needed). It happened to my supraspinatus along with bicipital tendonosis. It has been 6 months of rotator and scapulothoracic work (strengthening and stretching). I'm still using push ups, chin ups and inverted rows (bodyweight) for strengthening work. I don't know the why or the how, but doing those exercises (even dips!!!) are helping a lot in the pain free department. I am now starting to work in external loads (weights). Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Funny thing this rep colour scheme.

By the way, one can use the time to excel in areas like lower body strength and agility. Core work. Sprints.
    You know....

Yes!! Well, at least I had a very minor tear in my right cuff that did not require surgery. It took a long, long time for it to really heal up properly, and still today, I have to be cautious when doing certain exercises. For example, my days of heavy benching are pretty much over with. The straight ahead angle of my arms hurts. Overhead pressing is fine, but that range of motion where my arms are straight out in front of me....hurts.

My doctor gave me some very specific exercises to do with light weights which helped me a lot. Certain kettlebell exercises REALLY helped me tremendously.....Turkish get ups and arm-bars seemed to be the best. But, the healing was a slow process and required lots of patience.
RAW PRs--no suit, no belt, no wraps, no spotters

    Squat- 1075 lbs
    Deadlift- 1250 lbs
    Bench- 795 lbs
    Power Clean- 665 lbs.
    Barbell Curl-405 lbs.

225 Bench Press for reps-56 reps
40 yard dash-4.13 seconds (electronic official time)
    vertical leap-55 inches

Be careful with rotator cuffs, they're very fragile and the slightest strain can put you out of action for a while. Some of the guys I played baseball with couldn't touch heavy weights for almost a full year after surgery.

Partial tear summer of 1995.........On DB incline presses my left arm (injured) is till behind my right. I did not have surgery, I had a tough time getting a referal from my doctor for am MRI. I was 18 at the time and he told me I was lifting too much weight so he wouldn't give me a referal. I was on my parents heath insurance then and my whole family went to this guy. My father was so mad that he found a new doctor for my entire family. By the time I got the MRI, there was a good bit of scar tissue and the healing had begun, so the Ortho decided to just let it do its thing.

The injury was from over training, but it actually occured in a swimming pool. I did 1 breast stroke and my arm actually locked at my side, no real pain then. The arm unlocked over the next couple of days. The pain came when I tried do practice for football. I had no strength and could not even push myself off the ground. It was also very painful to rotate my arm above my head.

Now, I have added many exercises like Cuban Presses and External Rotations to my workouts. You can't push a rotator cuff injury!!!!

As for surgery, only a doctor with an MRI can advise you. There is no specific answer to your question, 6 weeks to 1 year depending on severity, and even then it may never be corrected........like mine.
