Baseball Lifting
Does anyone lift to get stronger for baseball?
If so, what is your routine?

Take it easy on the shoulders. If you're a pitcher, I'd say to not do any overhead presses and even benching.

Also, work your forearms......work them a lot.....and do squats & deads to build up your lower body strength & back.

So you're a baseball player? Cool, same here...though I dont workout out for baseball specifically. I sure wouldnt let a damn coach tell me how to lift, though.

Make sure you concentrate on the triceps too, thats where you get your swing power.

I love your name... Sweet LOU...
and I've never lifted before so I'd rather have a coach suggest what I should do, rather than me just winging it.
We do a lot of squats, hang cleans, and dumbell work.
We lift monday, wednesday, and friday for around 2 hours.
Monday our Core is Bench and plyo push ups, and Front Squats
Wednesday is Hang Clean, Overhead Squats, and Growlers
Friday is Bench and plyos again, and Back squats.

Don't lift shoulders ! Use an elastic stretch band to strengthen the muscle fibers in your shoulder. Your shoulder has fast twithc muscle fibers, causing you to throw a baseball very fast. Also these muscle fibers are trained. You know exactly when to release the ball becuase you have trained your ind and the shoulder muscle to work together. Creating new muscle fibers would mean you have to sort of say re-train them. I was a college pitcher and never lifted shoulder and threw 88mph.

Well I played ball when I was younger.. like 13, and i haven't played since then... and we haven't done drills yet so I don't have everything down yet...
so I think I may be alright.

As for training your shoulders, I do and I improved my pitching. Also concentrate on building a strong back, traps and lats and arms(back more important). My friends were afraid to train their shoulders, they bench, but they go slightly above parallel.

FOCUS ON FOREARMS! This gives you quick hands which in turn helps you get the bat to the ball quicker. One guy summed it up when he said Deads and Squats. These are crucial, in order to be a good ballplayer you have to have a solid core which gives you more power and ability to turn on the inside pitch.
As for no lifting for shoulders? I totally disagree with this, Im a ballplayer and pitcher and yes stretching>weight training. period. I train shoulders during baseball season just as I do for bbing. No excuses. And to the guy who said he threw 88 in college ball. My hats off to ya for getting to the "next level" but the pitchers I compete with are throwin 93-94, and no I do not throw nearly that fast. They all believe in training shoulders and two of them were named all-ohio in baseball. If you stretch enough you wont be nearly as sore and if you run after you pitch it helps get rid of the lactic acid which causes soreness.

so your 16 and playing with guys who throw 93-94. im 18 and im a lefty throwing 85 and people go nuts over that in high school. i could see in college throwing in the 90s but in high school its a rare thing.
anyway, really work on shoulders if you wanna pitch but make sure you stretch so you dont get tight and actually make you throw slower. having extra strength never hurt anyone you just have to be able to move it in the right way. dont worry about hitting any particular areas, just do the compound stuff and work your whole body because in athletics you need everything to work as a whole and baseball isnt any different.

yeah i'm lefty in high school (16) throwing about 80. i don't do much weight work on my shoulders. just stretches and small amounts of weight in controlled motions. i've never had any shoulder problems.

If you're a pitcher you really shouldn't be lifting heavy. flexibility is key, and if you lift you should be doing body weight exercises and high reps. Get a rubber elastic band or atleast a jump-rope(they break easily), tie to a wall and pull them outward. Also work on some core strength like your abdominals and probably the most important is to STRETCH. i made great gains when i followed these techniques.

I try to stay away from bench as much as I can, but if that what your coach makes you do, then you can't really do anything about it. When I do bench I use dumbells and not anywhere near my max. Stick with lower body and core work outs. As far as shoulders, overhead lifts are back for you rotator cuff muscle, so on shoulder day I work my rotator cuff muscle. But for that you dont want it to get bigger, you want to get stamina, so i only use a 2.5 lbs plate and do like 3 sets of 20 reps. You could get heavier but I wouldn't go over 5 pounds.

Yes I know its a rare thing but I play on a state-wide team, or traveling team if you will, in the summer so I hope that sums it up. Our starting pitcher at my high school, before he graduated 2 years ago, thew 90 and he was a lefty but he was one of a kind. The people I mentioned do nothing but play baseball 24/7 and they are just...awesome..
