Anybody Read the book "Skinny Bitch"?
A friend of mine said these exact words, "You have to read this book. It will open your eyes to the fast food industry and the FDA." So, here I am on chapter 6. She never mentioned that it is a vegetarian pusher. It goes on and on about how bad meat, poultry, and dairy are and the chemicals and such that are put in them. Being a big dead carcass eater myself (that's what they refer to it as) I am a little skeptical about some of it's claims and references. It has alot of stripped to the bone wordage on caffeine, alcohol, fast foods, simple carbs, and you name it. But I must say, it is scaring the crap out of me. Has anybody read it and what is your opinion on it?

catb,
i havent read it, but i've read many articles both on the web and in print on the same subject. i am a huge 'meat' eater myself, and have been for most of the 50 years of my life. i am now healthier and stronger than i have EVER been, so when i read it, instead of scaring me, i say to myself,
"well just look at yourself and the KNOWN evidence of what it has done
for you" and then i dont give the scare tactics a second thought..
now, mind you, i DO try to eat healthy and as close to nature as possible at all times. JUNK FOOD is BAD for you, and as far as the FDA goes, i've also read enough to realize that its as politically corrupt as any other regulating agency, and i rather 'restrict' myself and not depend upon them or anyone else for 'protection'..
caveat emptor,

I eat meat, actually more now than I ever did before exercising. I'd say I was "almost' a vegitarian beforehand, though... Meat itself is ok, but there are a lot of hormones and antibiotics in our livestock, unless you eat organic.

I thought humans were omnivores, consuming both meat and plants.

I think I need to reiterate...I am not a vegetarian. I was curious to know how many people read the book and what their opinion was of the book. I also eat tons of meat, dairy, poultry, splenda, caffeine, and occasional alcohol. I am just freaked out by the statements about the FDA, our livestock farming, and all the processes of events between the time a calf is born until it is being flushed down my toilet. I am not pushing the book, but some of it's contents is very interesting and really has me thinking.
sincerely,
a freaked out omnivore

I haven't read that book but I have read many well documented and researched essays on factory farming, etc., and it is pretty shocking. A few years ago, the NY Times followed the lfe of a calf from birth to slaugher and the processes that calf underwent should scare anyone.
I definitely believe that organic is worth it, especially when it comes to any animal product and many veggies/fruits.

I'll be sure to look it up. Although, presonally, I don't preffer the pro-vegetarian tone, it is certanly true what some of those things are saying - along with the use of illegal steroids and animal protein foods on herbivore live stock which caused the emergence of some diseases lethal to both, live stock and humans. Also, in my brief career as a mechanical engineer in food processing industry, I was introduced first-hand to amazingly inhumane conditions in which the live stock spends it's days and avaits death or amazingly cruel transport to slaughter houses, and was shocked with how much medicines (antibiotics) the animals were fed. Objectively (and stifling my rage for such mistreatment of animals), an animal that lived it's all life in 2 square meters of space and was fed kilos of antibiotics cannod possibly produce healthy, lean meat. Lucky as I am (what a perverse thought) to live in a rural area of an underdeveloped country, I am able to come across some REAL 100% sure organic meat, milk and eggs, and BELIEVE me, there's an obvious and screaming difference.
Sadly, I don't believe we can REALLY trust ANY labels these days, specially not in my country. And sadly, vegetarianism is no sollution. I'd suggest reading "Seeds of Destruction" by William Engdahl - while politically inclined as all other Engdahl's books, it brings out most amazing facts about GMO foods.

I haven't read it, and after reading your post, I don't need to!
I've tried the vegetarian route, and it just doesn't work for me. I buy my meats at Wild Oats, so they at least don't have the added hormones and antibiotics.

I love meat and pretty much need some type of it in every meal. I would definetely recommend buying certified organic meat/milk/dairy....pretty much everything....if you can afford it.
