i'd recommend starting with just the bar and learn solid form. for ****s and giggles, i would guess 120lbs max or so.

not even close. they might use similar muscle groups, but as far as movements go they are completely different.

Everyone has to figure out what kind of weight they need to use. Just go from the bar with no weight and gradually increase the weight. Since you are just starting, it is most important to ensure that you have good form. When you are using lighter weights, you can have ****ty form and not much will happen. When you start gettin up in the amount of weight you use the better your form as to be. When you start using crazy weight you will have to have perfect form or you rish substantial injury. Better to get perfect form from the get-go.

well i sued to do leg press 290lbsx12 and i squatted 135 the first time then within a few weeks i was up to 205, if you weigh 150+ i think you could do 205, but start with light weights till you get your form good because you can **** your back up real bad on these if you do them wrong

plz don't try to squat and you leg press unless you want to die, especially if you haven't squat before. it's a lot of difference. have to agree w/ second poster though, just go and squat.

Yeah the exercises are quite different. Squats use a lot of core and lower back strength aswell as balance and technique. Therefore your legs may be able to handle the weight but the rest of you may not and this could make you fail. I suggest you get in the squat rack though and start squatting, it is one of the best exercises after all. Just make sure you are breaking parellel.
