Eggs, why eat only the egg whites?
Why do people only eat the egg whites when having eggs? I see people saying I eat 8 egg whites/1 whole egg for breakfast, etc. Why only the egg whites? Is it the cholesterol they are worried about from the yolks? I thought by not eating the yolks you aren't getting all the protein out of an egg? What are the advantages of only egg whites vs whole eggs?

There is on average 5g of fat per yolk. If you eat 8 eggs a day, thats 40g of fat just at breakfast. The majority of the protein is found in the white also. There is about 3.5g of protein per white. Eating whole eggs would be ok if you were on a keto diet, but for someone who is on a high protein, moderate carb diet, there is just way too much fat in those yolks to be consuming that many a day.

im pretty sure its the cholestrol. there is so much cholestrol in egg yellows, don't want that ****.

Confused by the fact that the yolk contains more cholesterol than the whole egg??
Ok another question then, why eat eggs at all? Only eating egg whites, you are getting about 3.5g of protein per egg. I see that is a good cheap way of some protein but a small can of tuna has 18g of protein or a chicken breast with 30g?

The protein in eggs has an insane range of amino acids, and is considered to be one of the highest value of protein. Yes you can eat tuna and chicken, etc., but egg whites are shown to be "better" protein. I hope you understand that, but maybe someone else can add to it.

why not just eat chicken breasts every meal, every day for the rest of your life?

Eggs can be cooked so many different ways it isnt funny. They are used in hundreds of dishes,easily cooked, fast, portable, come in thier own case..., and yes just the white might be small in Protein, but it is a good source nonetheless. Much better than a whopper.
Why eat eggs indeed. Btw where do you think that chicken came from?

The latest studies show that the cholesterol in egg yolks actually lowers LDL's not raises them.
Tweeter37 is correct. 5g of fat per yolk times 10 yolks for instance would be 50g of fat at 9 calories per gram = 450 calories alone and that's not counting the whites! So 10 hardboiled eggs for breakfast is 775 calories. Easy to see why only the whites are used.

i always thought there was 7g of protein in the egg whites and 1g in the yoke, on a side note i just finished peeling some hard boiled eggs and they were not co-operating at all and i lost some egg white in the process, it pisses me off, i dont understand sometimes they peel perfectly and other times the peel just doesnt want to come off. sorry for the rant

Just to clear that up for others as your post is a bit misleading, the majority of protein is found in the egg white. But its only slightly the majority about 55-65% if i recall.
It ain't like the yolk has negligible amounts, it has nearly just as much as the white. The yolk also contains the nutrients

I buy the cartons of just egg whites at the store. I don't like wasting the yolks, half the egg. Plus it's a lot easier than cracking eggs open. A cup of the stuff I eat is 4 servings and each serving has 6g of protein and 30 calories. So a cup has 120 calories and 24g of protein. I usually eat a cup and a half for breakfast with a piece of whole wheat toast. Comes to about only 270 calories with ~40g protein.

2 reasons why i mostly just eat egg whites.
1. IIFYM i love peanut butter & almonds, walnuts ect. I would rather eat 60g's of peanut butter than a load of egg yokes, just personal preference.
2. I buy the ****ty caged eggs because i got no money, so there not great quality. Just my philosophy, like think if they are caged up all there lives pooing on each other, image how ****ed there offspring will be. No science behind that at all, however i believe the fatty acid profile of free range, organic eggs is better than caged.
If i felt like eating the yokes, i would. I just love peanut butter

use "old" eggs to hard boil. fresh eggs dont peel as easily

Agree,true, fresh eggs are hard to peel. Also , for bright yellow yokes, soak them in cold water after boiling......no green in them.

Would like to see the take of some of the senior members of the forum on the above.
Based on some articles that I read (mainly from Lyle Mcdonald), dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol don't have a strong correlation for most people. Besides the body produces its own cholesterol, and if we increase our intake of dietary cholesterol, the body produces less. And if we limit dietary cholesterol, the body produces more.
Seems like there is a lot of phobia around dietary cholesterol.
I myself used to eat a lot of egg whites. (11 whites + 1 whole a day)
Recently I have started eating 5 whites + 3 whole a day. That's a total of 56 eggs a week (21 whole + 35 white). Any reason for concern?

The cholesterol is in the yolk, so your count drops from 56 to 21 as far as that's concerned. But no, unless you're one of the rare people who are sensitive to dietary cholesterol, there's no problem. The fear of dietary cholesterol comes from a disproven theory from the 70s, and it's so well entrenched that I don't see it being killed by rational thought anytime soon.

Some people respond differently than others to fat intake. I ate all of my yolks for about 2 weeks as part of my regular diet and exercise routine and I put on an enormous amount of fat in only 14 days. I was eating 6 eggs a day for breakfast with the yolks and running 3 miles a day and lifting weights. If you look at your body in the mirror everyday to judge yourself then you know after two weeks if you have gained fat or not. And I did, so I decided to do 6 egg whites and 2 eggs with the yolk, so eight eggs for breakfast with some wheat toast for the carbs. (Wheat toast helps with the breakdown of protein, and it doesnt have as much carbs as a bowl of oatmeal). So like I said based on your genetics some dudes can eat 10 whole eggs a day and sit on the couch for a month and drop 30 pounds. I'm not one of those dudes.

I would call it more of a concern really. I actually still eat whole eggs but limit them is all. At my size Im only taking in 2600-ish calories a day. If I eat 5 whole eggs, that limits and overpowers all the other fats that I wanna eat for the day......olive oil, almonds, milk, peanut butter, beef, etc. I dont slack on fats , I just use a assortment of them spread throughout the day vs so much in one sitting.
There really isnt anything I can "gain" by eating 5 whole eggs a day. Im gaining but its because I eat pasta, bread, cottage cheese, things I see others cut. I would say on average, people here are active/healthy enough to not have to worry........me? Im gonna do what my instincts tell me and thats to limit them.
If I eat them whole, the whites get cooked, yoke runny . That gives you the most nutritional value of a egg.

I buy egg whites in the carton (sometimes, I will mix in 1 or 2 egg yolks) and always make scrambled egg whites. I don't fear the cholesterol or fat, but prefer to get fat grams from other sources. Also I can make a larger volume meal that keeps me fuller longer if I use primarily egg whites and toss in a few yolks occasionally.
