They're still around. Zane still works in the fitness industry last I heard, and Columbu is a chiropractor who had bit parts in some Arnold movies

They were both great bodybuilders - I loved Zane's symmetry and vacuum pose, and Columbu's lats and muscularity. They just don't measure up to The Oak. To date nobody else has, either.

EXACTLY, Arnold and the other guys were great... but they also didn't have legs, vascularity, or extreme definition... Football was cool when they wore leather helmets too, and basketball with the knee high socks, and high shorts, but you can't turn back the clock, so get over it.

They had big legs, good vascularity and good definition - just not the sickly, unhealthy, freakish, bloated, paper-skinned, pimply-skinned, druggy look that started with Yates and produced a gigantic, 300-lb, pregnant-bellied Ron Coleman.

There's nothing to get over. Supposedly the 'sport' has moved on - but to what? To ever-more powerful supplements and chemicals? To the abuse of insulin?

    Ugh.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion... and they didn't have to much legs... I have a friend who's legs are in better condition, and just as big as arnolds and he doesn't even workout... bottom line is that it will never go back to those days. And it's not all about drugs either, nutrition and training have played a huge role in the development of the physiques as well.

And based on bodybuilding criteria the physiques have definately improved.

Arnold and those guys were considered freaks and disgusting looking back in their day as well...

Your non-workout friend's legs may be bigger (very doubtful), but they are NOT in better condition than Arnold's. Don't delude yourself.

    > bottom line is that it will never go back to those days.

Maybe, maybe not. There are still a few reasonable looking guys near the top (Dexter Jackson being the best I can think of)

The 'sport' has always been a subculture, but today it's just a grotesque sideshow.

    > And it's not all about drugs either, nutrition and training

    > physiques as well.

It's mostly the drugs: eating and training doesn't take you very far compared to the effects of growth hormone, insulin, more powerful anabolics, etc.

    > And based on bodybuilding criteria the physiques have definately improved.

'bodybuilding criteria' implies objectivity, but it's all blatantly subjective, with a definite favoritism shown toward size. Otherwise, Dexter Jackson would be Mr. Olympia right now (he probably should be, even with his non-existent calves).

    > Arnold and those guys were considered freaks and
    > disgusting looking back in their day as well...

Sure, some did look freaky. So you can imagine how the public perceives today's grotesque drug freaks.

I've been following bodybuilding since the mid-70's. Bev Francis was the first bber I considered a freak, though Sergio Oliva and Lou Ferrigno were monsters as well.

    @_@ WOW

Anyway, I think the worst thing about the way the pros look today are the huge guts. They would look so much better if they had nice, slim midsections (like Arnold did) to really contrast with their other body parts to bring out the hugeness.

That is uber-vascularity - and does not count against an Olympian. He placed 11th because he'd peaked early and came in a bit smooth.

Zane had the best legs ever.

    Gigantic thunder quads look retarded.
In 1945, Adolf Hilter died and went to Hell. Satan asked, "why are you in Hell?" He replied, "I am responsible for the massacre of millions" Satan said, "well done, sit to the right of my throne." In 1953, Joseph Stalin died and went to Hell. Satan asked, "why are you in Hell?" He replied "I killed millions to stay in power" Satan said "good, sit to my left" 2010, Ronnie James Dio died and went to Hell, Satan asked, "why are you in Hell?" Dio replied, "Bitch, get the fuk off my throne!"

Your non-workout friend's legs may be bigger (very doubtful), but they are NOT in better condition than Arnold's. Don't delude yourself.

Maybe, maybe not. There are still a few reasonable looking guys near the top (Dexter Jackson being the best I can think of)

The 'sport' has always been a subculture, but today it's just a grotesque sideshow.

Sure, some did look freaky. So you can imagine how the public perceives today's grotesque drug freaks.

I've been following bodybuilding since the mid-70's. Bev Francis was the first bber I considered a freak, though Sergio Oliva and Lou Ferrigno were monsters as well.
I can understand not beleiving me about my friend, but his legs and calfs have striations in them, and cuts... with veins bulging from his calfs... never saw striations in arnolds.

Eating and Training do make a difference which is why naturals and every day guys are much bigger and stronger now a days.

And yes there is a favoritism towards size... But I recall Arnold Beating Franco who had a much better overall package many times... why, because he was bigger. You can't avoid rewarding size when some one is so outsized it is hard for them to fairly be compared.

Grotesque freakshow or not, I love it... and I know plenty of other people who do to... I wasn't around in the 70's but I think this sport is great and doing fine aside from polotics, which is unavoidable.

And even Dexter Jackson is much more improved and feaky looking than the boys back in arnolds day.

    You're welcome.

That side chest shot is amazing, with the gigantic pecs and incredible biceps. 30 years later it hasn't been equalled.

*** Maybe you can post a pic of your buddy's legs?

*** Franco was good, but had flaws Arnold didn't have. Can you show me some pics where they're together and Franco is besting Arnold?

*** Glad you love it. I used to love bodybuilding-type lifting myself. I was skinny as hell in high school, but eventually got to 190 in decent shape. You're looking sharp yourself - good arms - hope you stay 100% clean, no drugs of any kind.

*** He has a great physique. Awesome back-double-biceps. With a decent set of calves he could be the man.
