Question for the men??
If a girl who is a friend (although is technically and ex but you are now really good friends) brought you a diamond ring (mans one) for Christmas and says its a thank you - what would you think her intention was??
I'm just asking as I know how men like to double read a womens intentions

I would automatically assume it was a hook-up attempt. You don't just give someone a diamond ring as a "thank you".
It's a little strong. It might creep me out a bit.

I think her intention is to take pictures of you two making out, then post them on this messageboard.
Obviously.

That depends on the woman, you might not do it with the same intention another woman would do it with. Id say getting someone a DIAMOND ring without expecting anything would be very......hard to believe. But if she has money to spare.... then it wouldnt be a biggy (we are talking rich here) If she is in the normal class however, I cant see how getting such an expensive gift for a "friend" would be justified.

No I can afford to get it otherwise I wouldnt push the boat out - but I just dont want him freaking out as that isnt my intention! He has just been a really good friend this year!
Maybe just a plain ring then huh?

Haha. The thing is, it's way too big of a gift, especially for a thank you. Like Stalwart said, most guys don't really care for jewelry anyway. Be more subtle, a diamond ring has a certain conotation.

The size of the gift usually demonstrates the amount of affection. Buying anyone a diamond usually means that you have a lot of feelings for that person, especially a ring. Try a watch instead..

Guys wouldnt care **** about jewelery. You shouldnt even be thanking him for it. Is it a charity act? Should you be grateful for his friendship? If thats what you get your friends what do you get your boyfriend?
He is your friend because you two have a connection. You dont have to give him something for that. This might sound cold but if you really really want to do something for him just be there for him. To me, material gifts are no benchmark for affection of any kind.
Good luck

No actually, if a man randomly got a diamond ring for a girl as a thank you it would be quite the same. I have come to detest all that diamond rings stand for. I despise the culture that harbors such a gift and the standards behind it. If this guy is anywhere near the people in this thread in terms of philosophy, a diamond ring is not a good gift.

It would creep me out and I would instantly go to thjewlers shop and exchange it for a cubic zarconium (assuming I still wanted to be friends ....which I probably would considering the nice expensive gifts lol) if I didnt want to be friends I would just sell it. Diamond ring looks stupid on a guy anyway I think.

Well I would hope he knew me well enough to know I am crap with words and therefore this was a gesture of good intentions to say I appreciate him and I just want him to have something really nice to remind him of how much he means to me!

Get him like a home theater system or a pool table or something useful. Not a useless rock for his finger. A guy will appreciate this much more...ACTUALLY if you want to go jewelry get him a nice expensive watch. Watch is really the only jewelry a man should wear imo. At least it tells the time too lol

I get you're trying to be nice, but as you noticed, us menz interpret things a teeny bit differently. As someone else said, buy him a nice watch or something like that. Or some powertools :P

my advice: buy him something he needs, not a ring. since u are his ex, u should know what he enjoys doing and get something that relates to that. anyways my advice is don't give him the ring, send it to me instead, i will appreciate the gesture.
