boil and bite mouthguards are dangerous

I've read several articles that state boil and bite mouthguards are ineffective and dangerous. It also stated that you should have your mouthguard made by your dentist because they use a special material and it is actually custom made for your mouth.

I've been using those type of mouthguards since I was a kid. Through all the years of amateur wrestling, hockey, football, rugby, and the chess club I've never sustained any type of injury that only a custom made mouthguard would have prevented.

The ones the dentist makes are indeed better, but I wouldn't call the other types ineffective and dangerous. I am unaware of any evidence or data that would support such a claim.

The "Shock Doctor" series has a 10,000 dollar insurance policy on them... so I imagine they help somewhat. On the other hand it would probably be hard to cash in on that insurance if you did get injured...

Nine sets of lunges, ten reps be done,
To add girth as it is to strengthen.

Right their not totally inefective..Id say for some one with great teeth and are only using it for sparring it is ok.. But for MMA competition and Heavy Sparring a custom mouth gaurd is the way to go.. Im going to order one soon because i have bad teeth and i really dont want to lose them. A custome MG will help more than a B&B.

For me and every1 i know that uses mouthguards. Any that you have to boil in water and then bite down, those ones are alright definitely better than nothing but you get out of breath a noticable amount sooner than if you didnt have a mouthguard.

The ones that the doctor custom makes for you, fits perfectly, and you breath exactly the same as if you didnt have a mouthguard. It made a world of difference with how fast i got out of breath compared to the ones that you have to boil and whatever.

Also i found that my lips would always get cut from getting punched or kicked in the mouth when i wore a boil type mouthguard but with the one i got my dentist to custom make ive never had one cut yet.

my main point is that you should definitely just get the doctor to make you a custom one, the breathing and how long till you get outta breath is a large difference compared to the boil ones. at least thats how its been with me and the friends i have that use mouthguards.

Hey, if you've got a plan that covers them or can afford it then go for it. You're never wrong for taking maximal precautions to protect yourself. Bad teeth are better than none. If I ever get back into competing in MMA or any other contact sport I'd give serious consideration to going with one too.

alright ignoring the dental effects of any mouthguard...how are the cheaper ones(boil) at preventing concussions? compared to the custom ones? id be much better off with a loose tooth or cut on the lip rather than another concussion

yea i'm wondering how much do these custom mouthguards cost and I can have my dentist make it? IS it just for the upper teeth or can you have it made for both upper and lower teeth. If it's just for the upper teeth, Your jaw isnt stabilized and you can get knocked out more easily.

I've been using the boil ones for a long time and no injuries. I play hockey btw. I can spend 10 bucks on a boil one or 50 on a dentist one when they both do the same thing I will take the cheap one.

I think realistically some dentists dont specialize in this stuff...but you can get customs from other places i know bernard hopkins had a site he was sponsored by they had some awesome mouthpieces.

but in general a custom dental perfect fit mouth piece would range from $75 to $150 but i know they wind up costing around 800-1,500 in the end...talk about spending money **** better give me a granite chin for that price lol.

well is it true that the brain pad mouthguards are just as good as custom made mouthguards? Because i read that they stabalize the jaw really well and protect both upper and lower teeth. Also they are supposed to prevent concussions. I guess some pros use them as well. Anybody think the brainpads are really that good?

Does the mouthguard only protect the upper teeth or does it have a bottom channel too? bottom channel are important because it keeps the jaw in place.

yea it just sticks to my upper set of teeth. i havent had any problems and ive gotten hit on the jaw pretty hard enough times but the mouthguards your talking about are probably even better from the sounds of it. like if i dont have my teeth clenched and i get hit by a hook on the bottom of my chin then itll knock me pretty good.. i dunno anythin for sure but if these new guards have a bottom channel then maybe they would reduce risk of injury when i get punched in that manner,

those double ones if you choose to get one get it at your dentist dont ever buy the brain pad double its worthless for boxing or fighting...i used it before and it made it hard to clench my jaw...becuase in boxing they teach us to clench our jaw so your jaw doesnt dislocate when you get hit...and i tell you it was hard to close my damn mouth the thing was hard and my sides of my temples and jaw were sore the next morning and it wasnt from being hit either.

I thimk im gonna buy one of these.
    http://www.protechmouthguards.com/guards.htm
There is a guy on Sherdog named Tim who works with Protech and has a vast knowledge of making the gaurds. I told him about my problem. I have a underbite that is about 1/4 off.. I know a custom mouth gaurd is not a 100% garuntee that i wont get them Knocked out.. but its better than a boil and bite.. here is what he told me about my underbite

Having an under bite is very common with a lot of people. The main problem when using a boil and bite style mouthguard is that they just are not thick enough to offer an even bite area. You may want to think about a custom fitted guard that can be made to fit your specific bite.

For now wearing a boil and bite will still offer you some protection against loosing your front teeth. It's definately better than nothing and will help prevent against you chipping your teeth as well.

Because of your bite yur best option for maximum protection is going to be a custom fited guard. Regardless of what company makes one for you the thickness of the guard will be more than a boil and bite and offer you tha ability to have the correct amount of material for an even bite and comfort.

I hope I was able to help you out some here. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thank you

I have the brainpad pro plus and also the brainpad high performance which are supposed to be the best boil and bites out there. but when i formed it, my upper and lower teeth still show. It only reaches half way up my upper front teeth, and halfway down my lower front teeth. I tried reforming and biting down harder, but it just made things worse. Also I gas much quicker with a mouthguard. I think I am going to talk to my dentist and see what he has to say.
