Zma
I just ordered a bottle of ZMA and see that I am not supposed to take in in conjunction with any calcium-rich food. Unfortunately, that pretty much eliminates any of the pre-bed meals I customarily eat. Does anyone know the reason for the prohibition, i.e., does it make the calcium less effective, the ZMA less effective, or something else? Also, any idea what the window is? If I eat my last meal at 9 and take ZMA at 10 does this solve the problem?
Thanks!

ZMA and Calcium fight for absorbtion. In this case calcium wins so the ZMA is not absorbed.
Here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZMA_(supplement)
I found another link and it states that the ZMA should be taken 30 min to and hour before your last meal that way if your last meal has casein in it, it should not bother with the absorbtion of the zinc.

i guess it's the zinc and calcium interfering with eachother during absorption.
http://www.ehow.com/how_3953_absorb-...pplements.html
i have gone thru a half a tub of zma. kind of nice at times. not sure if i need it, really, but so far cool. let us know how it goes.

Yup, that should do it. You can also eat after (I'd suggest 30-45 minutes) taking the ZMA, this will not interfere with it and also allow you to get that last meal/snack in.

Hey dbf is your diet lacking in Zinc and Magnesium? If so then ZMA is great but if not you wont really get much from it besides some very vivid strange dreams.
But anyway i agree with Gunn you should be fine taking it an hour after your 9pm meal.

Kali, I think almost everyone is lacking in minerals -- modern farming methods have leeched most minerals out of our food. I think magnesium in particular is something most people are deficient in and it's essential to so many body functions. I decided to give the ZMA a try rather than my regular magnesium supplement to see if I could get a sleep benefit as well.
Where I am confused is that in all the ZMA articles I've read, there's a strong admonishment not to take calcium with the ZMA. But there are many vitamin formulas that advocate taking a blend of calcium and magnesium (together) so I am trying to understand why the recommendation is different for the ZMA. I am thinking perhaps it is the form of the minerals (aspartate) that's the issue. I need to learn more here, obviously!
Thanks all!

I've had customers ask me about this, too, about the ZMA/Calcium issue. They noticed, as dbflgrl and others have, that all 3 of these minerals, cal-mag-zinc, are together in every multivite, certainly every multi mineral, and most high-end bone support formulas by all the biggest, most reputable supp companies with good science and scientists at their disposal. Are all of these products and companies misleading their customers? If combining these minerals really rendered them nutritionally useless, why are they so commonly present in combination?
My take on it is this: Lots of nutrients, amino acids and minerals for example, share the same absorption pathways, and that's true whether the nutrients come from food or supplements. When you take two such nutrients at the same time it doesn't necessarily follow that you'll fail to absorb one, the other, or both. It could take longer for both to be completely absorbed and/or it's possible that you won't absorb 100% of either one. But AFAIK you don't absorb 100% of any mineral, under any circumstances, anyway. If you can avoid taking ZMA with calcium, great; if not, you'll still absorb some of both.

Actually, I've read that calcium interferes with Vit. B6, a component of ZMA, which helps in its overall absorption. It is not so much the zinc or the magnesium that is a concern as much as B6.

70% cocoa dark chocolate(rich in zinc) taken with some multivitamin probably has more benefits than ZMA
A 1999 study was undertaken on NCAA Football players during an 8 week spring training program. The control group was told to cease taking any nutritional supplements. Those who took the ZMA tablets showed greater increases in muscle strength, free testosterone levels, and IGF-1 levels.[3] This study was funded by SNAC Systems Inc. (the patent holders) and one of the study's authors (Victor Conte) has equity in this company.
Another study in 2004 conducted jointly by the Exercise & Sport Nutrition Lab of Baylor University, IMAGINutrition, and the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, found that ZMA has no effect on strength, hormone levels, or anaerobic capacity.[4]
