Hey Bob Chick; How Much Do the Pros Really Eat?

Hi Bob,

As you know, there are some stupid numbers flying around as to how much food the pros are really eating in the off-season. Some figures are as high as 8-9 thousand calories which I simply cannot believe. Also there are people who claim that the Mr. O competitors can eat over 500 grams of Protein a day. I remember a Flex article back in the day where Mike Matarazzo claimed to eat 3-4 chicken breasts per meal in each of his 5 meals.

Since you have been around these guys, how much do they really eat? Let's say a pro who competes at 250 lbs and goes to 285 or so in the off season. How much would such a person eat during the mass phase of the year? How much P and CHO can he realy consume?

More importantly, how do they manage to eat that much? Do they take appetite enhancing substances at all?

Thanks for your time Bro...

appetite enhancing substances? jeez... try b12 shots and 2g of juice per week on the low end. then tell me how much you eat. o, and they don't become 250+ contest weight at 3%bf by eating garden salads and drinking mineral water.

its bull**** they dont eat 4 chicken breasts a meal your stomach will bloat and have too much to digest...the only reason pros say that is to fool the public make it seem like they are not using ROIDS you basically eat 6 small meals and 2 protien shakes.

Your really think 8-9 thousand is all that much? Thats about 1200 calories a meal. Dont get me wrong thats a lot of food, but for a 300lb dood that isnt too much.

Lee Priest offseason eats whatever he wants and lots of it, doesn't really keep track.

When Dorian Yates was winning the Mr. O, he'd eat 6,000 calories a day in the offseason, and 4,000 calories a day when getting ready for the show. Being Dorian was 300+ pounds in the offseason, I think you could get a good idea of just how sufficient 6,000 calories is. That's why I'm really hesitant when I hear people say they eat 8,000-10,000 calories a day. Maybe they do, but it really ain't necessary.

Q ] Speaking of calories, how high would you go in the off-season and pre-contest?

My highest intake was probably about six thousand. Pre-contest I wouldn't go much below four thousand.

I know Nasser is stated saying he rarely ate over 3500 calories a day but I would also assume he has a slow metabolism.

You know what is funny that you people still think that the cell tech joke is still funny, people like you ruin it.

To add to the discussion If I eat less than 4500 calories a day I lose weight. I have a high metabolism but I really find it hard to believe that Nasser only ate 3500 calories.

im about 265-270 (5-10) and generally i'll eat

cereal/oatmeal
toast w/ PB
40g protein shake

shake and oatmeal PWO

2 burgers (no buns) 93% lean
bowl oatmeal

40g shake

2 burgers (no buns) 93% lean
bowl oatmeal

40g shake

2 chicken breasts w/ salsa

2 chicken breasts w/ salsa

14 eggs (12 whites, 2 whole)

30g shake before bed.

that is a general estimate, could be plus or minus a few things. that isn't super calorie dense, though it's a lot of meals.

i eat clean around 2600-2800 cals/day and i'm approx 270 with 18%. Currently I am eating close to 2300 to lean out back to single digit bf. my metabolism is slower than old ppl ****, but i am actually gaining muscle at this intake level. everyone is different. apparently i should be eating almost double my caloric intake to maintain. my college nutrition professor didn't believe me that i took in this low amount of cals until i gave her a 1wk mealplan documentation.

btw, 300g protein, 300g carbs and minimal fat yielded me close to 25lbs kept gains after an 8wk 100prop eod/75tren eod cycle, not my first. thought all of you should know.

Let's put it this way. If they are 265 (let's assume offseason) then 265 gram of protein(1 per pound of bodyweight) is 1060 calories. If they eat 1.5 grams of carbs that is 1590 calories. Say they eat 75 grams of fat, that is 675 calories. That's a total of 3325 calories and a macronutrient brakdown (carbs/protein/fat) of 48/32/20. That is probably if they don't do cardio and if they are eating only clean foods. Come on guys, not only is it possible but it is highly probable that they eat way more than this, especially with even a few dirty foods. Seeing as most pros do some cardio in the offseason and they don't go super strict on diet and their workouts are much more intense due to steroids, I'd say they could easily get into the 4000 range.

i think alot of pro's do exagerate

but in markus ruhl's video he lays out everything he eats an talks about it

he says in the offseason he eats

400grams of protein=1600cals
800grams of carbs =3200cals

thats 4800 cals right there and he doesnt mention fats.......so i bet his toal daily concumption of cals is around 5500-6000 cals

I now try to keep it at 2400 to 2700 cals. Even so, I don't have a lot of control over my diet since I'm in college so I go by feel. I just eat 2 or 3 meals a day and sometimes 4. I'll end up being pretty much hungry for four days and then I hit the buffet to make up for it and then it starts again. I know that really isn't good but it's been ok so long as I listen to my body.

I wouldn't doubt that he eats that in the offseason at least every once in a while but probably not on a regular basis. Gunter eats about 6500 calories in the offseason.

Yea, I've read that Ronnie regularly eats in the 6,000-7,000 calorie range, but I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he occasionally goes above that.

Haha, sorry to disappoint. Bro it took alot of cals. I probably down 7-8000 on a good 16-18 hour day. I was always into the meals. It's more of a chore than most of the training sessions. these days I usually aim for about 70 grams of protein per meal, 80-100 grams of carbs as well, 6-7 times a day. Lotta shakes too, mainly whey and malto.

2 chicken breasts w/ salsa

14 eggs (12 whites, 2 whole)

30g shake before bed.

that is a general estimate, could be plus or minus a few things. that isn't super calorie dense, though it's a lot of meals.
There are barely any sources of carbs at all.

For those saying Pro's don't eat alot...what planet are you living at? The problem is you guys believe that calories tells you how much a person eats, that is a big flaw. I can sit down and have 3 Philly Cheese Steaks in one day and that's already over 2,000 calories. These guys eat pretty clean (for the most part), but they eat alot...hence why sometimes the calories might seem a bit low for their size making you think they don't eat much. Imagine a bodybuilder eating:

2 Chicken Breasts and a bowl of oatmeal, let's estimate that at 600 calories.

x7 (7 meals a day), that's 4200 calories in a day.

That is still alot of food, but its really clean. Now add in natural supplements on the food (maybe some cheese on the chicken) and protein shakes, or milk to drink theh food with...that adds up, that will probably come out to about 6,000 calories.....

Now go into the BULKING season....everything is uped, which means they will probably hit 7,000-9,000 calories. These guys are not normal..remember that, you are talking about 250+ lbs of PURE LEAN MASS, not fat...do you guys understand what it takes to maintain muscle...let alone, that much muscle?

HAHA, pretty much. I mean, if I were to cut back on the protein, to let's say 40 grams per meal, that's 180 gramd of protein that I'm not getting. That's....hold on, let me open up calculator....that's 720 calories I'm giving up on, not to mention all that protein is a great insurance policy, as long as there's excess, you can't really lose. I gotz teh hi metabilizmm.
