before/after progress: 4 months of rippetoe = 42lbs gained
5'10", 22 years old
This is me May 25, 2006 @ 153lbs
This is me October 5, 2006 @ 195lbs
All natural. Let me know what you guys think. I also put on a LOT of mass to my legs (quads/hams/glutes) neither of which are shown much in the pics. Just take my word for it, squatting heavy 3x a week does that. It's not a final transformatoin, but more like a progress update. More details here if you're interested about my exact training/diet/etc: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=892878

Holy crap, dude. That's insane. I thought the program was more geared towards strength, but I guess you can gain some serious size as well! Congrats!

That's insane, I'd be happy if those were results from a year. 4 months though, good lord. Keep it up.

yep, started ripptoe about same time you did @ 147 lbs and 5'11
today in the morning im 179-180, but ive put un more fat than you. You really have good genes to put on 40 lbs of lean mass in just 4-5 months. But yeah Ripptoe is the ****
now that I think of it, you have freak genes man. In some article I read it said that the human body can only put on a max of 1lb of muscle a week... from what we are seeing you've probably packed 2.5 lbs of pure muscle every week.

Fantastic gains. You can see that you have increased in size rapidly as your shoulders have small stretch marks because the skin can't keep up with your muscle gains!!! That's some going.

Thanks guys! I wish I put on 42lbs of lean mass though. I did put on a fair amount of bodyfat, but yea I do think I have pretty decent genes. I'd say at least 30lbs have been muscle mass, probably a bit more though. My waist size increased by 2-2.5" if thats any indicator of chub gain. My gains have slowed down a LOT though (I'm shooting for ~5lbs/month now where before I did upwards of 12). Right now I'm just working on hitting 200lbs by the end of October. Originally it was an end-of-year goal, but hey I'm close so why not
Then I'm going to clean up my diet even more and probably change my routine around a little bit so I can focus more on lacking areas (like my side delts which are nonexistent).
Now I'm not a rep for Rippetoe or anything, but the program works wonders. I know it's geared towards strength, but if you look at the excersizes they are all HUGE mass builders (squat, dead, bench) as well.
Oh and thanks for the reps and links, I'll check them out!

On second thought I'm wondering about that article. First off, by that token (at optimal conditions .5lbs/week) I only gained 8lbs of muscle and 36lbs of fat and water/glycogen. I know my bf went up, but that's just ridiculous. I don't think 8lbs of muscle accounts for over 150lbs increase in some of my lifts.
Now I can see the reasoning behind the article and it may be true for more advanced lifters, but keep in mind this was my first serious training endeavour .. so they're mostly newb gains.
Anyway I have a wrist injury for the next couple weeks but I'm developing a 5 day split for when I return, so this is it for me and 'ol rip

Bump. Just wanted to let you guys know I'm gonig to be switching over more of a bodypart rather than full body split (5 days) after my wrist injury heals. I'll still be doing all the compounds though, so no worries. Rippetoe has done me a lot of good, but eventually the linear gains stop.
I hope anyone who's starting to put on some quality mass and strength for a solid foundation should definitely have a look at this program as well as the 5x5.

it says to take hinto account newb gains. So you gained 44 lbs. so i would say around 30-35 lbs of muscle. also you might have good genetics combined with the new gains. But now i woudlnt go for those insane gains you were going for before

Haha yea there's no way I'm going to gain like that ever again. It was fun while it lasted though! I pretty much stalled at 195lbs and my progress slowled to a snails pace (part due to sickness, but I think a lot due to just me not being able to keep up with the non-periodized linear progression). Can you imagine my frustration at not hitting the big 2-0? It's all good though, I needed some time off.

yeah i went through the samething. i went from 168-190 pretty fast but then have been stalled at 190 for SO long. dont really have a reliable way to weight myself at college but i went home last weekend and was 192 on empty stomach and bladder so im finally gaining again which is a relief

just to give you a gauge of how much 5 GOOD pounds is.........look at a 1lb package of ground beef in a supermarket. multiply it by 5. that is a lot of muscle. and it's probably about 90% lean, maybe 95. if you in reality gained 1lb of pure muscle per month that is a lot.sure, you could probably put on 40 or 50 lbs in a year, but you'll be at leas 20% BF.
as some other poster said, watch out on the bulkin thing.

Good to know you're gaining again. I'm currently still stuck, but that's ok.

Yea I know... I got kinda tubby on this. But I'm a lot happier with my appearance overall now than I was when I started, so it's still a pretty big step up. Just gotta watch those fat cravings nowadays.

RAW (no belt no straps no gloves) when I first started:
Squat 145x5 to 250x5 ATG
Deadlift 135x5 to 290x5 (double overhand ... I'm pretty sure I can pull 315 with alternate grip)
Overhead Press 95x5 to 150x5
Power Cleans 95x5 to 150x5
Bench Press 155x5 to 230x5
So pretty decent progress I think. At the end of the program I know my overhead press and power cleans were slowing down a lot, I felt VERY challenged on the 230 bench, and my deadlift was severely limited by my grip strength. My squat was going up merrily at 5lbs/week though!
