Deadlifts
I am thinking of switching back to wearing Chuck Taylors instead of wrestling shoes. Which shoe would you go with and if Chuck Taylors are the best should you deadlift in them?

I prefer the wrestling shoes over Chucks for deadlifts.

You can't compete in socks, so if you have designs on doing a meet, you need to train how you'll do it at the meet.

Most feds have a rule that the "shoes" to deadlift in must have a sole.
At least APF, NASA and USPF, I am pretty sure socks aren't legal footwear.

Definitely not in APA. I'm a ref there so I know what the rule is. You can wear deadlift "slippers" which are almost like a ballet slipper with a non skid sole. Thats about as low to the ground as you can get.

What about squats? Are wrestling shoes still good for those or Chuck Taylors? People seem to praise Chuck Taylors all the time.

that must have been what I saw some dudes wearing at a recent meet. It appeared to be a thin, essentially sole-less sock/slipper

I wear Chuck Taylors for squats and deadlifts. For me they are the best. The flat soles give you maximum contact with the floor, they're thin and have little cushioning, so you have a solid footing to push against.

Quick question.. for someone who lifts at home and is not planning on competing anytime soon would it be harmful in any way to deadlift and squat in socks/barefoot instead of old running shoes?

Only is you squat wide or pull sumo.
If your feet/socks slide, you are screwed.
If you squat narrow and pull conventional, it shouldn't matter.

Thicker soles and greater heel elevation makes the exercise harder. Pulling in socks vs. a pair of sneakers usually cuts at least an inch out of the lift since the bar is starting a little higher up the shins.
I wear Adidas sneakers which are almost flat and they work well for me. Just look for a pair that are as low as possible. If you don't want to wear Chuck's or wrestling shoes, I've seen Adidas TKD and Samba sneakers that are practically flat, Puma F1 shoes, and assorted casual sneakers and martial arts shoes that aren't designed for running or basketball which would all be fine for deads.
