conann's Rippetoe Log
Hello, I'm a 44 yr old ex- soldier, and I've been weight training on and off for 26yrs. Unfortunately I only trained about 3mths/yr of that.I weigh 100 kg and I estimate my bf to be around 26%. I'm mainly interested in getting strong and lean. I think I need to lose about 40lbs of blubber which I'm sure will take about a year if I do it right.I have just started week 3 of the Rippetoe program described here. I know this program is aimed at the younger crowd, but I would be interested in how others of my age and strength level are going.
My stats
wt 100kg
ht 5'8"
waist 43"
wrist 7"
w/outs 18/20 Sep 06
Squat 3x5(111.5)
Bench 3x5(90.6)
Deadlift 1x5(111.5)
2 Oct 06
Squat 3x5(140)
Bench 3x5(102.7)
Deadlift 1x5(133.4)
Situps 3x5
Thanks for reading

Welcome to the journals and congrats on picking a nice program. Lots of people making huge progress using the Starting Strength workout.
Check out jimmari's Starting Strength journal (39 yo), which he updates both on the over 35 section in the regular journals section. Also check out the journal of Tad_T (44 yo) in the regular journals section. That guy was incredibly successful using Starting Strength for a long time, and just recently moved to the intermediate 5x5 program.

Well, actually that makes me happier. I didn't want to have to convert it given the limited functioning ability of the mathematical part of my brain. Sorry if I made you feel badly. You're doing great!

How do you get a plate that weights .2lbs? The smallest i've seen ar 2 1/4 or those magnetic 1lb'ers.
Are you just doing the convertion from kg to lbs just to post so us dumb Americans can understand how much you are lifting?

I've got pairs of fractional plates in 1lb, .75 lb, .5 lb, and .25 lb sizes. Several places that have them, I got mine from "Iron Woody" on EBay.

Yeah, but on Starting Strength it won't be long before those *will* be your numbers in kilos Seriously, nice work so far. Also good move on letting the deads catch up with the squats, actually you should find your deadlift numbers moving well ahead of your squat numbers pretty soon. Much easier to add weight to deads.

Kal, I prefer to use lbs because that's the system most of the forums use, and my plates are marked in both. Even though we've had the metric system since I was 10, I still prefer the imperial. By the way,a good way to make microloads is to find stuff at the supermarket like stickytape. I bought a few rolls of packing tape that weigh 1/8th and 1/2 lb each. Came to less than 10 bucks.
Enjoy your day
Mark

Ron, I can't wait until I can do all my warmups with big wheels on, it will save time messing about with plate changing.

Nice job on the first month. Your lifts are progressing nicely, especially squats and deads. Rippetoe's program is great - simplicity and undeniable results. Just make sure you keep your calories up - that will help you fuel continued strength gains.
