Calorie intakes

Y'know these recomend calorie intakes we see to gain mass, do these really take into account your daily activities?

Like one of my more BIG bulking diets is around 4.3k calories. Now people say thats alot, and yes it is alot. BUT, if i'm minusing my daily activities from it, it really isn't that much. I must burn off about 500 cals atleast on a regular day. Minus that from the 4.3k cals and you're left with 3.8k. Now its not looking so bad.

So all you guys eating 4k+ cals, are you taking into account the calories you loose daily? Lets say you do phyiscal activities alot throughout the day and burn off about 800 cals. Will you then eat 4,800 cals to make up for what you lost?

You burn off way more than 500cal/day. If you don't, you're dead. Sitting still, or sleeping will burn around 80/hr. So if you slept for 24hr, you'd still manage to burn about 1900cal.

Is that so? If this was the case i'd have to be taking in over 7,000 calories a day just to be around the 3-4k mark. I don't get it.. not many BBers take that much.

Thumbs up

Errr your body consumes alot more than 800 calories in a day.

Your maintenance calories is the amount of calories to "maintain" where you are. Say your body needs 2,500 calories for the sake of arguement to maintain your current weight. If you eat less 2,500 everyday, you're going to loose weight. If you eat more than 2,500, you're going to gain weight.

Say you wanted to gain 10lbs, say your body was consuming around 3000 calories a day. You want to get at least a 500 calorie surplus for the day to gain weight, so that means eating 3500-4000 calories during the day. When you take in that surplus of calories, that forces your body to grow. The bigger you are, the more calories your body needs to maintain your current weight.

All you have to do is take in more than you burn. There are piles of charts, calculators, etc that help give guidance as to how many calories you are indeed burning when doing different activities. You may need to take in 7000 to create a 3000-4000cal surplus, but, keep in mind, that will amount to about a pound of fat (3600cal). You're better off gaining the extra weight a bit slower and more controlled. If you did indeed create a surplus of 3000-4000 calories daily, from day one, I'm willing to bet you'd probably make yourself sick in a hurry. Try creating a surplus of 500-1000 calories. That way, you will gain 1-2lbs/week, and not shock your system.

Ughh.. i understand now, must of been a blonde moment. 2500 calories is the maintence amount because your body at the end of the day would of used up round about that, correct? Making you break even, thus no weight gain or loss. BUT, going over this means at the end of the day them extra cals will still be inside you, which equals weight GAIN.

I'm guessing doing exercises and things will mean you will break even at 2500 alot quicker, meaning i'll have to eat more than a regular day to get that surplus.

Soo.. on a regular day, 3000+ cals should be sufficient to gain weight. BUT on exercise heavy days i should eat more according to howmany cals i have roughly lost to make sure the surplus is there still at the end of the day.

I seeee i seeee. Thanks for clearing that up lol.

One pound of fat may equal 3600 calories, but 3600 calories does not equal 1 pound of fat. Thats only if you get 3600 calories FROM fat.
