Question What Is A Good Bench Press?

I've just started lifting 4 weeks ago and currently benching 170lbs. What weight should I be aiming to lift for my height and weight??? I'm 6ft2 and weigh 210?

Next week 175 lbs would be considered good, the week after that 180 lbs would be good.

    It's all relative.

You are already stronger than the average guy. If you press 250lbs, you'll be stronger than the average gym goer. At 300lbs you will be one of the strongest benchers in any average gym gym. At 400lbs, you will be a bench god to most people. However, you would still be light weight to an elite bencher your weight.

    Well ...

    A "Good" bench press?

One that you don't accidentally drop on your chest or neck. ;-)

Seriously ... at 6'2" and bodyweight in the ~ 200 pound range, a bodyweight bench press isn't bad at all ... puts you in the "athletic" category (Joe Average off the street probably can't bench his bodyweight).

3 plates, or the 300 pound range, will be very good if you're natural ... will likely take you a few years of training to achieve.

If you can get up to double bodyweight raw and natural, that's fantastic. I've been training lifetime natural for 30 years and can't do that ... I'm 6'3", 250 and the best I can push is 385.

    DelD,

As some others have already stated, a "good" bench press determines on who you compare yourself to. Personally, I bench 200 at a bodyweight of 160. If you compare me to the average guy on the street (including non-lifters), I am somewhat strong. If you compare to me to the average gym lifter, I am normal. If you compare me to serious lifters (such as most of the people on this forum), I am below average. And if you compare me to elite powerlifters, my lift is an absolute joke.

As a short term goal, shoot to bench your bodyweight. Once you've done this, you can say "Hey, I'm stronger than the average dude!"

I agree that it is all relative. If you are getting into weight training as a lifestyle, the bodyweight goal is a good start. Polling people that are non gymgoers or even casual ones, and a bw bench is a lofty goal for them. Once you hit your bw, just keep striving to improve it from there.

as long as you're progressively moving up in weight you're going in the right direction imo, not too much need to worry about a "good" lift

are we talking about repping or max here? i'm 5'7", 165 and my max is 240 and think that's decent. but yesterday, when i went to lift, i saw this asian dude who was 5'5" probably around maybe 170 bench 315x10 without a spotter. he was probably cambodian, those guys are strong.

I think a GOOD bench press is 1.5x your body weight...anything over that is just straight AWESOME! Like Doc Iron said, 2x your weight is just awesome and most will never touch that...atleast natural!

you just beat me to it. i was gonna say that once you hit your body weight you have taken your first step in becoming strong. once you hit 1.5 times your body weight you got a really decent bench. 2 times is awesome and would be your first step on the path to elite.

A good bench press for someone who has been training for a while would be 1.5 x BW IMO.

    Idiots Who dont know ****

400 pounds is a joke to eliter powerlifters? The USPA record is 427. So yeah shut up. Only person a 400 pound bench is a joke to is a avid steriod user and those *******s cant compete in the USPA events so who cares. 400 bench at anything up to the 272 weight class is great.
