Exclamation Caffeine makes me relaxed - I want the opposite!

Honestly - Energery supplements(mainly caffeine) make me relaxed, not awake. I fell right asleep last night after drinking a Jolt(140 "Jolts" if Caffine). I self diagnosed myself as having ADHD - since I cannot afford to get a psychiatric evalution. I was wondering if this has anything to do with it? I have taken some minor psychology classes and read about neurotransmitters and the affects of different stimulants have. I was wondering if I may actually have ADHD which could be the reason for my relaxed feeling on caffeine. This is the same for ******** - I took it one time(stupid I know, I was nieve) - suspecting it would help me stay up and concentrate. It did indeed help me focus and concentrate but I did not have any more energy then before. It was actually the opposite - I was much more calm.... Any insight to my findings??

Do you have health insurance? Your family doctor may be able to help with the diagnosis and treatment. He may refer you to a specialist which may or may not be covered by your insurance.

As far as the caffeine goes, I would stay away from it for a while, you may have built up a tollerance to it.

Nice job on the self-diagnosis. I also self diagnose myself with lot's of illnesses.

    Interestingly enough...

Here is a study that says caffeine can be used to treat ADHD in children.

Can caffeine be used as a natural alternative to ADHD medication?

The active part of caffeine is methylxanthine is a mild stimulant that activates noradrenaline neurons and seems to affect the local release of dopamine, a key neurotransmitter. Dopamine plays a part in motor control and a low dopamine level is believed to be the cause of Parkinson's disease which effect patients ability to control their movement. Another notable effect of caffeine is that it reduces the blood flow in the brain. This is similar to the effect of ADHD medications, such as Ritalin, that are stimulants, effect dopamine levels and cerebral blood flow. The cognitive effects of caffeine are also similar to ADD / ADHD medication. It makes users better a rapidly processing information and paying attention.

Studies on non-ADHD school children and caffeine are mixed. A 1987 study on Kindergarden children found no noticeable effect where as a 1994 on prepubertal children found that it did improve attention and manual dexterity. On children with ADD / ADHD the results are bit more promising. A 1973 pilot study used two cups of coffee a day as an alternative for medications and the results were promising. In 1981 caffeine was used as an alternative and as a supplement to medication. It found that caffeine in low dosage had the same effect as 10 mg of methylphenidate.

    Hope that helps some.

Their joy is self-conquest. Difficult tasks are a privilege to them; to play with burdens that crush others, a recreation. They are the most venerable kind of man: that does not preclude their being the most cheerful and the kindliest.

I have the same problem. Aderrall just calms me down in anything less than 35 mgs, caffeine has minimal effects unless i consume about 600 mg at once, even ephedrine doesn't do much for me energy wise. Clen does give me a quite a boost, but the side effects are a bit much.
    I love me some peptides

I posted this in a NO-X thread that's still on this page:

"One more question: Have you ever taken meds for ADD or something similar? This is something a lot of people overlook. In fact, if you've taken meds for something similar, NO products in general might even make you sleepy."

I don't know what to tell you to get around it. One of my sons gets sleepy when taking NO-X or caffeine, and yes, he has/had ADD.

    Hi akaye47,

I'm not diagnosing, but people with ADHD do respond differently to caffeine. You don't need to worry about a formal diagnosis, if this condition (if you have it) is not affecting life activities (e.g. school or work). Just be aware (if you have it) that stimulants might affect you differently than what supplement labels state. For example, your reaction to ********.

Also, what do you need energy drinks with caffeine for? If you have this condition, you should have more than enough energy!

And that's the end of todays psychology lesson!!

Disclaimer: I’m a practicing psychologist, but not a sports/nutrition psychologist, so don’t hold anything I say against me.

I feel the same effect. A relaxed energy, clear mindedness and focus without effort. There are different types of ADHD:

"In contrast to ADHD-C and ADHD-HI, people with a sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) are characteristically hypoactive, self conscious, "spacey", passive, and withdrawn. A key behavioural characteristic of the disorder is that those with SCT are more likely to be lacking motivation. They become easily bored with things that do not stimulate them and thus will seek things of interest because of their underaroused state. Conversely, those with the other two subtypes of ADHD are characteristically more extroverted, impulsive, distracted, and driven. Other behaviours typical of this condition is a more disorganized thought process, sloppiness, more careless mistakes, and a greater tendency to lose things more easily."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sluggish_cognitive_tempo

While I believe it is hard to catagorise anyone to a specific TYPE, and havent been diagnosed myself I have characteristics of the above. After years of stimulant experimentation I find the best for me are:

-Caffeine Anhydrous (100mg servings 3x a day, 200mg is also good but I get a stronger crash)
-ARLI Venom Hyperdrive 3.0 (be careful to cycle this potent stuff)
    -Biotest Spike
-Yerba Mate (25g of loose tea approx 200mg of mateine/caffeine xanthines)

    To avoid for long-term:
-Ephedrine/Ephedra, while they work for me in short cycles. They drain my system and eventually leave me anxious, unfocused and lethargic.

I havent tried any ADHD medication because my case isnt severe however if anyone can add their experience I'd like to hear...

all i can say is that low doses of caffeine will relax me, but if i up the dose, it will do the trick.

I think anything lower than 150mg's won't do much for me.

probably you have a resistance built up to it and therefore coffee/ energy drinks don't do it for you. Try going off all caffeine for a couple of weeks. I used to be able to drink like 5 diet cokes between 9 & 10 and go to bed at 10:30. Don;t yell at me about the Diet coke either because I'm off it.
