Here's his 1980's olympia... fricken awesome look, and really great posing. I like how he builds it up slowly then executes the pose quickly at the last second.

So, do you think Zane used steroids? To me, he doesn't look that "massive", like his body could be achieved by just lots of hard work. This is defently the kind of look i'm shooting for.

frank zane is the only bodybuilder around that time who won the O and didnt use steroids, with only 18 inch arms kind shows he didnt, espically when you think he's the same size as stallone

I would also like to know why the original poster, and many other (misinformed) people, think Zane did not use steroids???
Most everyone in pro sports post-1956 used steroids at some point. Did Zane lie at some point and claim to be natural? I have never heard or read anything along those lines. During his era steroids where not even a big deal--the media only recently noticed that they may be able to boost ratings by creating an anti-steroid hype/band wagon.
Please let me know if he claimed to be natural; I really look up to the guy and that would change things if he lies about unimportant issues.
Very nice video =) I wonder what the other bodybuilders were saying/thinking when they seen it live. To me its unlike anything else of that era, and has influenced everything else ever since.Last edited by JoeyTS; 09-13-2006 at 02:49 PM.

2. Stallone DID use lol.
AAS doesn't equal muscle size. Many people use AAS to no end and don't succeed.
Anyway, I hate Frank Zane's physique and still cannot get why everyone likes it.Eh, the forums have changed.

Woah, guys. Hostility? Cry???
Frank Zane's the **** and I believe that he likely used steroids. I'd have a hard time believing that in all his years he hadn't injected ****. Still one of the most aesthetically pleasing bodies in BB'ing, especially for his time.
I'd kill to have a body like him.

God...
You're the one who lacks a basic grasp over the english language... Even when i take the word misinformed out of your statement. It still CLEARLY says that I (the original poster) believe that Frank Zane did not use steroids. Which i did NOT say. I hate it when people put words in my mouth.
I would also like to know why the original poster, and many other people, think Zane did not use steroids???

You have to remember that at that Olympia he was a lot smaller than the years prior due to injury. Please look at the picture attached for a full blown Zane.
Also, he was known as 'The Chemist' due to his knowledge of Nutrition(vitamins, minerals, etc..) A big advocat of B Vitamins, which he claims in high dosages have a steriodiol effect.
I think he probably used a lot more in his yonger days with Arnold and the boys.

i didn't know the judging criteria was based on how healthy they looked??? well u learn something everyday, nice one mate.
by natural i mean no roids. i said i have been training for a year and a half.
My point is that if i can get in the same ball park, sizewise, without being on juice (i admitt i look no way near as good as zane) how can he be given a Mr O??? its not about how nice ypur lines are or how cut u are, at the end of the day it is who is the biggest and most muscular. conditioning and cutting are to make the muscles look bigger, create an illusion, after all the goal is to look as big as possible

You gotta laugh at some of the comments that come out on the forums
Let's get down to a few decent points that have been mentioned and some that haven't.
- He didn't really lift as heavy as the other bodybuilders at the time. Apparently he had problems with his lower back??
- Not sure about the high dosages of vitamin..But I certainly read an article when he pretty much believes in high dosages of amino acids. He also says in the article that steroids are not the way foreward.
- Yes as bigpop said he was nicknamed the chemist due to his knowledge of chemisty/chemicals etc..not realted to steroids. He was a teacher.
- He was an absolute master of posing - You HAVE to give him that. Brothers..practice makes perfect..
- He believed in posing to songs that built up..ideally progressive rock (e.g. Pink Floyd) I think he may even have brought his own music out now.
- People mock that Olympia win in 1980's..however tell me whyh thousands of people where in awe?
- As for his juicing who knows..? It would APPEAR as though he was probably not as big juicers as "the others" but who knows..and Zane isn't probably going to speak much about it either.
- He was a classic ECTO-MESO - Despite some fool on the teen board the other day saying he was pure MESO....
- He always stayed pretty lean and didn't necessairly do the HYOOOOOOOOOOOOGE bulk's that others were at the time. When he gained it was obviously lean..and I like to call it "ZANE MASS" I don't think he went much over 200lbs..and always pretty much came in lighter than the others (approx 175) HOWEVER visually it looked good and he didn't necessarily NEED to be hyyyyyyyyyyooooogeeee - Bare in mind though his weight now probably wouldn't allow him to qualify for an Olympia! (But that's cause Weider is a complete tool)
- He beat Arnold because he was more CONDITIONED on the day..whereas Arnold went more for mass.
- Along with a few others, he was one of the most aesthitcally pleasing bodybuilders i've ever seen (IN MY OPINION) however if you think that RONiINniiehahHAeya cOLEMaN "LIGHtEEIGHt baBBBiyyyyy" is aesthetically pleasing with his legs that look like someone got a bike pump and pumped it up till there about to explode then that's your opinion
At the end of the day..
Zane>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>God
(Perhaps an exagerration )
P.S. Who cares what size his BICCCCCCCCCCCCCEPPPPPPTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSS were..it's what they look like on stage..not what the friggin' measure.Last edited by Toxic04; 09-14-2006 at 07:47 AM.

There are plenty of amateurs out there bigger than him (and hell even in his time there were guys MUCH bigger than him) and don't pull the conditioning bull**** because once you cut off the black and white pictures he's ripped, but nothing to WOW about.

Zane used steroids, even at his "small" level to attain that type of conditioning and size without steroids would be difficult for someone of his frame.
Its also pretty well known in the bbing comm that Zane used T3 and many say he blew out his thyroid and had to use it even today. If he used T3, he most certainly used aas.

Here's some great Zane pics + 1 with a shirt on
